How to prep bumper for painting.
What do I need exactly to remove the paint and get it ready for paint. I want to prep the bumper for the body shop before they paint it.
I read sand paper. What type? I read solvent. What kind and where from? Anything else?

DA It off.
Is there any damage to it? If not, continue to cleaning it with a pre-paint cleaner. Tack it. Paint Clear. And why are you prepping it if you dont mind? Isnt this why your taking it to a body shop? |

Take a 400 grit sand paper and wet sand the bumper with a consistant flow of water ( garden hose ). your only trying to create a some what course surface for the primer to attach to. Repair any scrathes, pin holes....etc Primer Wet sand primer These are the basics there is a bit more detailed info in regards to prep work. If you really want to this PM me |

I ordered painting supplies today to paint it myself since I want to know how it's done. This is what I ordered. ![]() I'll wet sand the bumper. Apply one coat of primer after. Apply 1 coat of paint. Wet sand again after it dries. Apply a final coat of paint and let it dry. Than put on 1 coat of clear. Does that sound right?

Concerned about the paint and clear coat coming in a 12oz spray can???? I can tell you automotive painting is nothing like buying a can of spray paint and going at it. In a vague nut shell. Base coat is the paint which will need a reducer in order to be reduced ( thinned out a bit for better flow ) That goes according to the paint manufacture specs. Clear is obviously the clear coat which a activator is applied ( hardener ) This should be sprayed with a HVLP automotive spray gun Process basically is to wet sand bumper, spray your primer, wet sand primer, look for and fix and problem, re primer if need be and re wet sand. Spray your base coat then clear coat. This is not something that is easily learned nor is it something easy to follow under a brief DIY. You should practice, practice first on scrap material first. Not to mention not all paint manufactures come out with a really good paint match just by paint code. Trust me Sherwin Williams as a good line of paint that I bought for my Z, My Z was SS as well. If anyone needs the details let me know. I would leave it to a professional. |

Ya it's hardly loading.
I guess I'll drop it off at the body shop and let them do it. They use Sherwin Williams paint. I'll still use what I ordered to repaint the front license plate cover on the sedan Aero bumper since that cover comes off. If that goes well I'll repaint the front bumper
