v35/g35 coupe oem jdm 350gt-8 paddle shifter install
I'm doing a paddle shifter install on my 03 jdm v35 skyline 350gt 5at same as usdm g35 coupe.
Thought some of you guys on here might be interested so will do a bit of a diy
And show what genuine oem jdm paddle shifters for early g35s look like
And are real things.
Why jdm instead of works bell or later model shifters. The jdm sit in the correct location and dont bind with the steering wheel. They also semi bolt up to holes that are already there. Matching leather bound levers.
What are they off. The jdm skyline 350gt-8 sedan which runs a cvt auto gearbox that has a 8 speed manual mode using paddle shifters. This gearbox sounds good but isnt great at all.
Anyway heres the pics of the main part you need the shifters...
I have 2 sets of these, 1 will be for sale later on. Unlike later versions of the g the wiring isnt tucked up under the dash even in the v35 jdm cars. So wiring needs to be sorted. Other parts needed but not totally required are the steering column plastics or you can trim your own to fit. Also the lower mounting bracket or make your own or leave it out.
Stage 1 - paddle shifter install
Disconnect battery
Remove the plastic steering column plastics top and bottom and the plastic panel under steering column footwell
Remove the steering wheel centre and airbag by removing the 2 t30 security torx bolts
Under the plastic caps on each side of the steering wheel. Pull the centre out and remove
The airbag wire by popping the black plastic tab and pulling off the plug. Set this aside safely.
Unplug the grey plug for the steering wheel stereo crusie control buttons. Remove the 19mm
Nut and pull off the steering wheel. A tap with the hammer can help pop it off. You should be
left with this.
The next step is trimming out the cluster plastic to allow the paddle bracket to slide in place.
You can see the square notches ive cut out in the above pic. You also need to trim a bit off the clock spring plastic to help the paddle bracket sit flat. At the bottom at each side below the screw holes. Just flush with the verticle plastic bits.
Next unclip the indicator and wiper stalks and remove and pop off the clock spring. Youll be left with the below
Installing bottom bracket
To secure the bottom paddle bracket you need to make some simple angle brackets or if your lucky like me modify the 350gt8 bracket to screw onto the existing bracket.
Trimmed 350gt8 bracket fixed to back of factory bracket.
Finished bracket with a coat of plastidip
Remove the 2x fixing screws in the clock spring and replace with 2x longer bolts 25mm long. Fit clockspring back same as you removed it, clip in indicator and wiper stalks. Fit new bracket to back of factory bracket using new longer clockspring bolts. Use washers. Finish bracket should look like the above pic.
Bolt up paddle shifter unit
Slide paddle shifter over clock spring. Use 2x trim screws to fix the top 2 holes to the factory holes which line up perfect. Use 2x trim screws to screw the bottom 2 mounting tabs on the paddle shifter to the lower bracket you made in the post above.
Fit the top plastic column cover
Fit the bottom plastic column cover. The 350gt8 one is different to the normal g35 one. If you cant get a 350gt8 one you will need to trim your factory one to suit and some of the mechanism may be exposed however its all black so should look ok.
Install the steering wheel as you took it off and your done

All in and running now, sorted the wiring. Will post up a clear wiring diagram when i get the chance. Involves making up a double relay thing up not too difficult. You have to move the gear lever into manual mode then the paddles work. Feels way better than using the lever and much snappier changes. I do have a spare set of jdm 350gt-8 paddles up for sale which i can send to the usa or wherever........

The twin relay wiring would be similar for a later model. I got most of mine setup from later model install but most diagrams were incomplete and not clear. The paddle switches are basically earthing a circuit and the twin relays disconnect the sport mode earth while you conect the earth from the paddle switch, just as if you are pulling the triptronic lever.

Man I just did this instal on my car. However I must have gotten something mixed up. When I put it into sport mode (manual mode) it jumps into it then goes back to drive and stays in drive. Any insight? The shifter stays in the manual position it just stays stuck in drive on the dash till I go either into reverse neutral or park.

I had that happen when I was testing mine out. Check that you are grounding the correct wires. If I remember correctly, the wiring diagram above has two wires going to the wrong place. The wiring diagram on infinitiscene is correct.

You don't need to remove your headunit to access the wires. You can get to them right in front of your shifter. Just check the service manual for your year/model to make sure the wire colors are correct.
