every bug in the house gets killed. spiders get a pass though, since they eat insects.

Wolf spiders are not venomous, but the bite can hurt like hell. One point you need to know, they are monogamous for life so when you see one, there is certainly another and they are most active at night when they hunt.

The easiest and most reliable way to identify a wolf spider is it's eyes:

If what you have does not have 2 big eyes in front, a wolf spider it is not.
Many many many many spiders are misidentified as a "Wolf Spider" by the layman.
For more information check wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_spider

Your spider is definitely not a brown recluse: (notice the fiddle shape on the carapace (head))

And definitely not a hobo spider:

thanks for the info. i can tell it's not a brown recluse now (which is very reassuring). however, i know it's not a wolf spider because they run rampant around my yard in the corners. i've seen enough of them to tell by the color and patten. this one is just too dark and more of a "silk" covering. from what i've been checking on the interwebs, i was guessing a common house spider but the light triangles make it look a little scary. maybe if i would've let it bite me i would have superpowers by now and swinging from skyscrapers.
