+1 on not just dumping it on your parents like that. It's their house, and they should okay it first.

On the advice side, I like the English bull, I'd rock one. The Shiba inu looks really awesome in those pics though, so I'm a little torn.

+1 on the Shiba Inu's, I want some someday. And cross it to an Akita. And then to a bull terrier

I now have a lab which is by far the greatest dog on earth, it listens to everything I tell him. Which he's pushin 125 lbs I think he's the largest lab I've ever seen. If I wasn't at work I'd post a pic....He truely is a BEAST!

OP goodluck on whatever you get, I've had dogs all my 28 years I love them they really are mans bestfriend if you take to time to train them.

+1 for parents house, their rules.

but if you talk them into it...

I have a female chocolate lab. Too smart for her own good, obedient, and not that big...only 50-60 lbs. But she still is a bit hyper even at 5yrs old. She sheds very little, so no hair all over the place.

My 2 year old son is borderline abusive to her and she just sits there. Once she has growled at him but she was in a dead sleep and he ran up and tackled her trying to give her a hug.

Could also consider a Samoyed, they're pretty hairy, so that could be a bit of an annoyance, but they're an absolutely beautiful dog, very friendly, loyal, and they always smile.

+1 gazillion. Pugs are the best dogs ever. They are classified as a toy breed, but certainly do not act like one. The downside is they require a little more maintenance than other dogs and you have to be super careful in hot weather due to their scrunched up face. Mine just turned 1 and he is the joy of our lives. So far, we've had to take him to the vet for infected face folds and an ear infection. Both of these could have been prevented if we had paid more attention to keeping those areas clean. Pugs are like magnets, they will follow you everywhere if you let them and they definitely smarter than they look.

You should take a very careful look at how the dog will live. Will it be around people all the time or home alone while you work (now or later, when you get kicked out, LOL) does it require a lot of exercise and attention? Will it be around kids or old people? Here are a few tips, but the Web should have tonnes of tips for choosing a dog.

#
Large/Medium Dogs that are high energy or require a lot of attention: Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Greyhound, Rottweiler, Pit Bull, Beagle, German Shepherd, Cocker Spaniel, Boxer, Poodle, Dalmatian, Weimaraner.
#
Large/Medium Dogs that are lower energy or require a little less attention: English Bulldog, Bassett Hound, Newfoundland, Mastiff, Great Dane, St. Bernard, Old English Sheepdog.
#
Small Dogs that are high energy or require a lot of attention: Pug, Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Papillon, Welsh Corgi, Jack Russell Terrier, German Spitz.
#
Small Dogs that are lower energy or require a little less attention: Maltese, Dachshund, Boston Terrier, Bichon Frise, French Bulldog, Toy or Miniature Poodle, Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, English Toy Spaniel.

According to the above, I'm surprised to say I suspect a French Bulldog is a pretty good choice. To me, that's not even a real dog, but that's just me. Whatever you do, find a reputable breeder or better yet a shelter where you can rescue a dog and give it a good life. If it were me, I'd go to the shelter, fall in love with a mutt and bring it home OR get a golden retriever from a reputable breeder.

I;d kill for husky but it is far too big and hairy for my house, my parents wouldn't let that one go.

I'm leaning the most towards a bulldog or something like that that can be left alone for a while without eating my couch or bed and jumping out a window lol

Ivry Prl, those things are cute but they tend to be kind of yappy and easily excited don't they? My ex-girlfriend had one and it never shut up, but when it did it was a relaxed chillin dog. Hairy as hell though!

OK, I agree you need to talk it over with your parents and not just throw it on them.. that could be all bad for you and your dog.

You said somewhat small... I think Pugs and their breathing issues are kinda disgusting, they sound like they are about to die when they get excited... How about checking out Italian Greyhounds???? They are just a miniature version of a real Greyhound, super lovable, friendly, and get a lot of attention from the girls... My grandma who is not even a dog person has taken to my lil IG "Bella" and now she keeps her during the day while I am at work.

My Bella listens to me, never steps out of line and will follow me everywhere. She stays on the sidewalk as I walk into the street, and she will not even stop off the sidewalk until I smack my leg and say "Come on girl" Loyal, obedient, lovable, smart, clean, almost no shedding at all, never has that nasty wed/dirty dog smell. Oh yeah, and she does not make much noise at all. Only when someone knocks on the door, but once they are in the house she is quiet... AND food??? she eats very little, leaving for small yard land mines. When she is hungry, she scratches at her food bowl, or just picks it up and carries it to me. when she has to go outside she runs around and then back to the door and stands there wagging her lil tail...

***edit*** Pics, not my dog, but ones like her.

They truly do this when you come home...

Sometimes they think they are a cat...

I just had to post this one....

Correct me if I am wrong, but a Whippet is just about an in-between size of an Italian Greyhound and a full sized Greyhound, right??? I have never seen one before, but I have been told that they are a lil bigger than my IG.
