Fatlace article on fake wheels...

http://fatlace.com/slammedsociety/reps-or-real/

Quote:
So the debate continues and weve taken our stand against some replica wheel manufacturers. Its not a debate whether or not its cool to rock them, its more to support our friends who run and own Rays, Advan, Work, and AME. Our friend Jay from JDM EGO has pushed this ideology as long as weve known him and weve become good friends with these wheel manufacturers throughout the many years weve been tuning cars and its our right to take the stand of not featuring cars with replica/fake wheels. A big part is that were sponsored by one of the Japanese wheel manufacturers mentioned above so we feel its part of our loyalty to their company.

These companies push hard to come up with designs that excite all of us when they first debut at Autosalon only to get copied the day theyre released with a cheaper knock off. Sure, some of the knock off brands are built well and can handle the track but its only due to the origin of its design. If the design wasnt built tough, the original manufacturer wouldnt make it, right? Also, it shouldnt be about price since its Forged vs. Cast.

So to this site that has tried to take a stab at us by using nationality as a reason to like/hate the brand, please understand the logic behind this decision.

Heres an example of a new wheel manufacturer doing their thing. Rotiform out of Westminster, California. Their own designs, Their style.

I kinda see the point but...really? The brands they are supporting are the ones that ALWAYS get repped...

I don't see the fairness of that article to those who won't ever afford the real deal.

Lame, better than featuring the same type of car with the same type of "real" wheels only a different color 5000000 times lol

Makes sense to me. If I could only afford a Chevy Aveo, I wouldn't expect to be featured on a car enthusiast website. Just the same if I could only afford (or are willing to spend, whatever your reason is) knock-off wheels, I wouldn't expect to be featured on one either.

If you're happy with fake wheels, then that's fine and everybody wins. But if you value exposure and attention, you may want to consider stepping up to authentic.

sounds to me like the only reason they are doing it is cause their sponsors are complaining and they wanna keep making money from them

I really don't care if you are rockin' reals or reps, if your fitment is on point, then its on point regardless of who made your wheels. Not everyone can spend $3-$4K on wheels.

I don't agree with their decision, but its theirs to make. If FL only wants to support only "real" wheels then that is their choice. I just don't see how you can look at a car like this and say its not HellaFlush

Here is an edit that was posted in that article, exactly the point I made in my above post.

Nice, its not about who makes the wheel. Its about bringing car enthusiasts together. Money is the main reason they do not like the replica wheel side.

i've said it several times on G35 driver and i'll say it again.

I own a $4500 set of uber rare crazy offset Works, and I also own a few sets of rota's. Buy whatever wheels you want. The look/feel/stance of YOUR car should be chosen by YOU. I wholly understand someone building on a budget and choosing ROTA as their wheel choice, which saves them money to improve other aspects of their car, exterior aesthetics, engine mods, whatever it may be.

Its the age old theory of 'name brand' versus 'off brand' -OR- 'designer label' versus 'walmart label'

i dont really care if your wheels are rotas, as long as you arent trying to pawn them off as authentic rays.

I do AGREE with HF/FL that the original wheel designer needs to rep their own brand very hard, and file lawsuit if their design copyright has been infringed upon, but with EVERYTHING ever created, their will always be a knock off.

There's the Apple iPod, and the chinese iP0d.
There's designer fashion, and the mainstream knockoff.

It's basic economics. If people are willing to pay 3000 for a set of wheels, and you can create a variation with slight change in design, and sell them for 1500 per set, and you've changed the design enough that the original designer cannot sue you for copyright infringement, then more power to you.

And I wholy agree with this post from the Fatlace VRT Miata thread:

Quote:

jake

07.23.2010

they are not fake, if a wheel is a wheel, then its real. its not made out of play-doh guys. if a wheel is a KNOCK OFF that implies the company is taking credit for the design, which is not the case. they are replicas. theyre replicas for people who cant afford baller ****.

calm yourself.
