Driving in snow with 4x2 SUV

I'm going to Tahoe in two days; I was supposed to borrow my aunt's AWD RX350, but long story short I'm stuck using my brother's FWD 4Runner (why it's called a 4Runner when not 4WD is beyond me).

Anyways, the high clearance is obviously a plus, but what about the lack of power to the rear two wheels? Will this be an obvious fuss on our way up to Tahoe? I'm more concerned about the hills I'll need to climb in order to make it to the resort, and I'm not sure how'd the 4R would fare (though anything would be better than my RWD coupe).

Snow chains will be in the trunk, if that'll help. The 4Runner has all-seasons, this is my first time driving to Tahoe and will probably be the last (I'm not fond of cold weather). I'll admit it could be a lot worse, we're taking a total of seven cars up to Tahoe (rented a cabin with 30 people) and of the two, one is an RSX and the other a Corolla. Everything else is 4x4, with the exception of the thing I'm driving.

We run through all sorts of snow and ice storms in our Honda Pilot -FWD with no trouble.

The problem is the hills, but with chains you should be fine. It may be easier in a 4WD or AWD, but I think you'll be fine. Brings a tow strap just in case.

We used a rental 4WD Toyota Highlander to get around the resorts in Colorado and rarely used the 4x4 feature unless driving up a steep driveway.

Biggest factor is your experience driving in this type of weather.

I hate to burst your bubble, but 4runners are RWD biased and not FWD....

Don't doubt a Toyota in snow. I had an 84 celica gt that went up a 6% grade hill without chains on 6" of fresh snow.

Nope, not the ST165. I had the RA64, 22RE solid rear axle 5sp. All stock except a optima yellow top.

+1 you will definitely struggle in a 2WD SUV unless it has some kind of locking diff in the back. My old Trailblazer was a handful when i put it into 2wd on a snowy day and hills were a def no go.

Did not know that. Just did a quick search on Google and, WTF?

Well at this point we really don't have access to another vehicle, so I guess the RWD 4Runner will have to do. I just read the weather report, it shouldn't be snowing at all so it should be fine.
