Not be a wuss.

Kidding. I just have a cappuccino every 300 miles or so.

wait are you driving 8 hours or 3 hours?

Try not to leave at night, but if you do keep your speed at 5 mph over what you are use to....going fast keeps you more alert and less likely to fall asleep at the wheel, no cruise control!

I've taken the san diego to vegas trip many times and let me tell you it's really boring after a while. Nothing to see, nothing to do for miles on end. A fun thing that I've done is go to sears and buy a CB radio, and chat with people on the road...it's fun (not like that one scary movie at all!!) Plus truckers are cool about giving you advice on what places to eat at, where to watch out for cops, etc...

A companion helps as well...But if you're alone, a little coffee and water will do it. You might have to stop and pee every 10 miles, but you'll get there in one piece.

Hey the trip is a good time to test out the real speed governor of your car Just kidding....don't speed too much, the hot weather and high speeds cause a higher pressure build up in your tires and can lead to a tire blowout. Which reminds me, lower the PSI of your tires by to about 30-32 if you are traveling in hot areas, they are bound to go up about 5 PSI during the drive.

pull over if you feel sleepy or start to doze off. it is not worth your car or your life or someone elses for all that matters. I've driven up to 15 hours before and have had far too many close calls that could have had very bad results... but i've done a TON of roadtripping while in college on my own in my mr2.

i would never continue to drive now when i feel like i can't keep my eyes open.. i know it's easy to think "i can make it, i can make it'... but you can't really.. so becareful. I consider myself lucky to now...

I've gone from San Diego to NE Indiana and back multiple times. I did the trip in 2 days (20 hours a day) driving so 8 hours just flies by. My advice to you is to not drink too much coffee or you'll have to stop a lot...beef jerky is your friend and get a book on tape...that really helped. Music gets dull after awhile but a progression of a book makes the time fly by.

Oh- bring a DVD player and plug it in (cassette adapter, PAC, whatever) and "listen" to a movie or your favorite TV shows.

I keep my XM on news channels later in the day, since the talk and constantly-changing subject matter keeps me alert.

oh yeah.. i wouldn't recommend no-doze.. at least for me it makes me feel like puking after sometime and my stomache seems feel like it's going to explode..

It keeps me awake but not by means of caffeine but because i keep gagging into a plastic bag and spitting out the saliva generated when you have that i need to puke feeling... but i guess it works for some people.

If your 8 hrs away from Vegas, the best tip is to fly.

If its a 3 hour drive, make sure you have good friends, good music, good refreshments, and check the time every now and then to see if its 4:20.

Good luck at the tables.

I second that.

I, myself just got back from a 12 hour (each way) road trip to Myrtle Beach. Drove straight thru, only stopping for gas. Cigarettes and Coffee kept me wide awake especially on the way home working on 2 hours of sleep with a brutal hang over.

The routine blunts for every state along the way made the journey alot more interesting and helped time move along.

Can't forget the good music. I recommend making different playlists/cd's of your favorite jams.

Most of all, enjoy the open road.....road trips with your buddies are always a blast.

The night before your trip eat as many beans as you can. Rice and beans, baked beans, lima beans... as long as you eat a lot of beans you'll be set.

The next morning, wake up and drink a lot of coffee right before you hit the road.

When you finally get in the G and head out, make sure that you keep the windows up and just fart like it's no one's business. That's right, fart for the whole 8 hours.

It's a hoot, trust me.

I once was driving back and was tired AND horny.

So, I decided to unzip my pants and polish my shaft.

Ini addition to the excitement, I had to be extra-alert when SUVs and large trucks passed by. That kept me awake for the whole 1 hour drive.
