Engine troubles
Hi all - had to have my car towed in for engine problems on Saturday and wanted to see if anyone had any insight.
Was driving and felt the car was a bit laggy on the power, so I slowed down and pulled over. Engine, when restarted, was making a rattling (I think?) noise over 1000 rpm or so. Didn't take it past 1000. When I let off the gas it wasn't able to hold a steady idle, was bouncing around between 300-800 for the 10 seconds or so I had it on before turning it off and calling AAA. Any ideas on what this could be?
Car is an 06 with 63k, driven maturely, with oil changes and all dealer service done on time.
At the dealership right now, but they aren't going to get a chance to look at it for a bit. Still under powertrain warranty though.
Thanks all

Just called the dealership to check in. Apparently they aren't for sure yet, but think it's the long block, which would mean an engine replacement. All the car has done to it are wheels, springs, and an exhaust. I am still under powertrain (but not bumper to bumper ) warranty. Is there any reason they wouldn't pay for it?
A couple months ago the oil pan was replaced ($2100) from being cracked after bottoming out really hard in downtown Philly (I'm lowered). Work was done by the dealer and everything, but obviously wasn't covered because it was my fault. Is there any reason this would contribute to it?

Spun bearing? From the description it sounds like this could be the problem. not being able to hold idle, and loud rattling sounds makes me think of this.
When you cracked your oil pan did the oil drain out and was the car still running? you could have scored your bearings at this point but not to failure and it just took time before it finally went south. Did the car run without oil even for a short period of time?

The car was starved (well not necessarily starved, but there was a huge oil leak) when the pan hit, but the car was shutoff and towed immediately. It seems that I might have dodged the bullet on that front, but,
Infiniti called me today, the engine is definitely donezo. They are going through the paperwork of getting it fixed as warranty work, so I should know in a few days if it's approved (don't know how it wouldn't be, if for some reason they don't approve it, I should have decent legal grounds). The car was at 3700 miles from past oil change (was scheduled to go in today, go figure), and they noticed that it was actually pretty low on oil when they got it. I always had oil changes done at the dealer every 3k (bought a lifetime package, bought car brand new), and never bothered to check the level between changes (which were every 2 months or less, for me), so it's very possible/likely that it's been burning oil for quite some time.
Either way, another 4.5 engine bites the dust, this one with 63k.
