Question Rx-8?

I've searched the forum and haven't found much about the RX-8. I have always loved that car and briefly considered it - ultimately went with the G - for obvious reasons of power, prestige, reliability, and luxury.

I live in NYC and really dont see too many RX-8's on the street...thinking about getting one as a second car (06GCoupe is my daily driver) sometime in the future...

Has anyone here had a chance to race one? I've been itching to test them out but RARELY ever see them on the highway...My guess is that we would walk them on the highway but I hear they are pretty quick from a dig...any good stories or experience tangling with an RX-8 would be appreciated.

Also, I've never driven one and would only get the 6sp...does anyone here have more experience with them?

well,

RX8
- drink gaz like there is no tomorrow
- drink oil like there is no tomorrow
- average reliability
- no torque at all (high rev. engine)
- nice sounding engine
- Nice handling
- nice shifter (throw, feeling, smoothness)
- nice interior
- Even if they wanted too, it's not a 4 seater...the large tunnel in center take all the place in the rear

I never really got used to the exterior styling, poping out sunroof make it look goofy.

When I was shopping I really wanted to love them but ....I never felt the "magic spark" like the first g35 coupe i saw...

Probably the most disapointing car I've ever driven.

What I had envisioned in my mind was not even close to reality....the damn car has absolutley NO torque at all. It's ridiculous!

The styling is subjective, but there's something about it I can't get used to...I think it's the C-pillar and those little "suicide" doors.

About the only good thing I had to say about it was the handling and the interior quality seemed very good.

Not a car I would choose at all.

I also thought about this car and test drove it when I was looking to replace the 300zx, I loved the rotory idea and and suicide doors and of-course who isn't a fan of the RX7 so I really wanted this car to do well and if it had I would have been there in a heartbeat, But I started checking out the RX8 forums and they have had some major problems with really bad MPG (some I read even reported single digits) and the stalling issue even on brand new cars, and less than impressive power, if you spend any time of those forums at all you will hear all three of these issue being talked about.

I like the Rx8's... only thing i dont like about them is that they dont make power until like 7k... but i guess the upside of that... is that you get to hear the nice soundign motor

if you go on youtube and put in RX-8, you can see the review's from TopGear (love that show, nothing like seeing guys talk **** about ferrari's =).

they gave it awesome reviews for its handling and stuff. If it's not your daily driver, just a weekend cruiser, then the reliability factor can kinda go out the window.

if its a daily driver, then i would never touch it.

No go

It is not worth it as a second car. Personally I would go with a new or used S2000. It is faster, a convertible, extremely reliable, and actually gets good fuel milage.

I think you need to do some research. The RX8 gets gas milage in the teens, actually worse than most G35s. Also most owners actually carry around a case of oil in the trunk as you can expect to burn a quart of oil every 1500 miles.

Yes, I have and one was highly modified with cool blue flames coming out at shift points and all, but I smoked all of them very easliy, wait VERY EASILY, even the blue flamed guy who started by passing me and throwing those blue flames out of the exhaust to intimidate me into racing him... Also, his car sounded like an old hooptie with NO exhaust, LOL... But the flames were cool I must say.

I drove one in 04 when car shopping and they drive and ride nice, but have NO torque until 5-6000 RPM's... A civic pulling a horse trailer would feel more powerfull off the line from idle!

I've had RX-7's in the past and loved them, but they were all TERRIBLE on fuel economy, the rotary is just not efficient untill about 7000RPM's

I've never raced an rx8, but from what I've been able to gather online, the guys running the greddy turbos are only trapping about 103mph in the 1/4. It may drive fabulously, shift great, be pretty light, but it's not a straight line performer. I saw something one day about the new VW passat trapping 102mph stock. That's just sad.
