Xtronic CVT

So the new nissan maximas are using the new xtronic cvt transmissions. so what do you guys think about the new cvt transmissions? after reading about how they work, i wonder if they will implement this type of transmission into more of their vehicles. in theory, its better than an automatic and the 6mt.

I think if Nissan decides to tune their CVT transmission for performance, we are going to see a whole new dimension of performance vehicles. Imagine instaneous torque/hp at any speed! Nissan has one of very few CVT transmissions that can handle high torque and power, this could be the edge Nissan needs to take down its performance rivals.

Seems like CVT is pretty heavy and takes up space though. Japanese G35 sedan (Skyline 350GT-8) had a CVT and base on foreign reviews it was praised for response and performance. Maybe we'll be seeing future G35/350Z/FX/M with such transmission.

Nissan has had CVT transmissions (at least recently) since the introduction of Nissan Murano. why not put it in a maxima? great concept. but i bet it may break more?...

Doesn't the 2007 G35 Sedan have a CVT option (not just in Japan anymore)?

Wait... doesn't the new Maxima have the CVT also (the commerical with the guy making the engine noise when the lady in the passenger seat is putting on lipstick.)

I've driven two CVT Muranos and I like them. I think it is a great solution. Long term durability is still a concern for me, especially in high HP applications. I think they should eventually replace conventional automatics, but keep manual trannies as an option for the cars that currently have them such as the G35.

Even the new Nissan Versa can come equipped with a CVT.

Yes and the CVT has improved from the Murano version. It is smoother, more duarble and quieter. The CVT Versa is apparently more fuel efficient than the standard.

Yep, you are right Deane. Nissan claims the CVT on the Versa to get 1mpg better fuel economy over the 6MT.

Damn, the thread is back to life.

Anyway, my wife is driving the 2010 Versa daily and it has very good MPG on it. That little 1.8L CVT is not bad with 3 adults and 1 kid in the car.

First post here and it is bumping a thread from 2006 so he can add in a car that didn't exist at the time..

Anyways, i am driving my moms 09 Altima right now with CVT and I actually really like the transmission. It gets fantastic mileage and the car has enough power from any speed. It just downshifts and goes.
