C6 or 996 targa

I am looking to spend approx $45K ish

I really wanted a Cabriolet at first but i have slowly talked myself out of it; combination of safety, security, using it on a track and the fact my skin burns in about 5 minutes flat.

However i figured a Targa was a great compromise.

Therefore the z06 is out so it is between a 2002/3 996 targa and a Corvette C6

I will install aftermark SatNav so the only real thing i know i want is Triptronic.

Would be very interested in getting everyones opinions.

Thanks.

I say C6 if you are going to bring it to the track every weekend, but why not go full out and get the Z06

If you gonna spend that amount, you can get a close to mint condition 993 Targa. Not a big fan of the 996 (not that I will refuse one) front, but love the rear. I still prefer the air cooled version better. Nothing opens your eyes in the morning like the smell of engine oil in the cabin

Interesting about a 993, i just fancied the latest model.

I cannot get a Z06 as they dont have a Targa model.

I live in Santa Monica Los Angeles, and being able to drive down PCH regularly it would seem criminal not to have a soft top of some sort.

If you fancy the latest, you should go for the 997. I think it has best of both worlds - look of the 993 in the front and 996 in the rear.

I know exactly what you mean about topless driving in CA. It is not that practical here in the DC area, although I have a SL. I only go topless in the Spring and Fall, very rarely in the summer as it gets too damn toasty with the sun beating down on you all day. I don't take the car out in the evenings so that limits my topless time. But the time I do, it's great!!

no way i can afford a 997.

I sat in a C6 today, i thought it was pretty nice, i cant see how the porsche is worth so much more, well i suppose it depends on how much premium you put on the badge. If i could afford a porsche i would buy the porsche, but when i add in the maintenance etc, i can only really see myself buying the C6.

The C6 is the best performance bargain on the market. The styling is awesome but the interior is nothing near porshce. If you can live with a less attractive interior..i say go for the vette!

Now i am just having trouble finding an insurance company that will take my history.

I am 27 and recently moved to the USA, nowhere seems to recognise that i have been driving for ten years, they all want to say that i have no driving history.

The C6 is a better track car, but Porsche has a better Tiptronic system, if that is important to you (Surprised, elau?). Personally, I can't see the fun in tracking a car with an automatic, even with paddle shifters and automatic rev matched downshifts, but that's me.

I wouldn't buy a used C6 on ebay without seeing it and driving it first. Even if you have to fly across the country to see it, it will be worth your while, and the airfare is small change for a $40k+ investment. It's just too much money to buy something used sight unseen, IMO. Definitely subscribe to CarFax and get the vehicle history report on it first.

Why would that surprised me???

Like Z06ified said, you should do a PPI at the least before plugging down $40K on any used car.

Good luck with your decision.
