Any 2002 5 series owners?
I have a friend looking at a 2002 525 with 60k miles. He really likes the car, but is afraid of costly breakdowns. What problem areas should he look for?

I'm not sure of specific problem areas, but German parts are generally very expensive, and if he doesn't do the work himself, labor on German cars is always very expensive, even outside of stealerships. They generally are not mechanic-friendly to work on.

Ask the seller which dealer the car has been serviced at.. Get the VIN, call that dealer and tell them he's in the process of purchasing the car and would like to know the service history. They should disclose everything the car's been taken in for.
