Ready to Buy-07 G or 335i Sedan?
My Thoughts:
1. Exterior-even. 2. Interior-G. 3. Acceleration-335i 4. Handling-335i. 5. Price- G. (By around 5K) 6. Performance Potential- 335i 7. Realiabilty- Even. 8. Fun to drive- 335i (Remember My opinion.) Note! I have driven and checked out both vehicles carefully. These are my hands on opinions, not an armchair opinion. So PLEASE, I really value your HONEST opinions, and YES I realize that this is a G forum! So, bring them on in the 1-8 format as I have done above. Thanks in advance, Randy |

I say the 335i Sedan. My neighbor just bought one. Much better car than the G in my opinion. I was at the Infiniti stealership Saturday for oil change and had the chance to compare. The G is too utilitarian in design.

Well I drive a S2000 currently so I'm totally unbiased. I have started to research both extensively as well. If money isn't an issue I'd go with the Bimmer. The new motor is absolutely fantastic. The one I drove had the sport package and I was quite impressed. Right now, I'm leaning towards the G due to price. There are plenty of people on this forum and on Edmunds getting either car for very good prices currently. But I trust Japan more than I trust Germany with my money, and the price difference is the kicker for me.
1. Exterior-335i, if it has the sports package, the rims make that car. 2. Interior- Very close, couldn't say one way or the other. 3. Acceleration-335i, G isn't far behind. 4. Handling-335i. But the G is on its' heels. 5. Price- G. (By around 5K) Agreed, and this is the most important thing to me. 6. Performance Potential- 335i, FI means cheap mods to make more power. 7. Realiabilty- G, the Japanese make a more reliable car IMHO. 8. Fun to drive- 335i, again the G is right on its' heels. |

I just went through the same thing, by the time I had everything I wanted on the 335 I was able to save $9k by buying a G-35S and don't regret it one bit. For me, after all the over analyzing, the single thing that made me think twice was how loud the G's cabin is compared to the 335, but like I said, I don't regret my decision.

From what I've read on this forum and the Bimmer forums, the G gets worse mileage if that means anything to you.

I'm glad you've driven both; most guys ask this question having not been in one of the cars (or either). Are you really that conflicted, or do you have a leaning? I only ask because having driven them both I found they were very different in enough ways that I thought one thing from either would make someone love or hate them enough to make their decision, if that makes sense.
For example, in terms of size the G is a larger car. It feels larger both in interior space (a good thing) but also in terms of bulk (not a good thing). For me I wanted a more nimble, tossable car. As well as the G handles the steering is less precise and there is more body roll, that's just how it is. The upside is you get a much larger trunk, more shoulder and hip room, more leg room, etc. If you're using the rear seats often that's definitely a consideration. In terms of price the G is not only better by 5k, but it also have more standard features. I hate the fact that for wireless cell you need two options on the BMW (prem or nav AND wireless assist), what a pain in the ***. However on that same token the BMW has way better residuals, a better money factor, and higher resale. In terms of engines, although both are strong they are strong in entirely different ways. The 335i gets all it's torque from 1200-5100rpm, it's an amazing city and passing car, it has sinful off the line acceleration and good mpg, and it will be receptive to mods in a big way. The G on the other hand has no direct injection and will suffer on the mpg front, it will not pull as strong below 5000rpm and it isn't as smooth; BUT, it does get an amazing second breath int he 5200rpm range and will pull and pull and pull... Me. I chose the 335i, but really I think they are too different to take someone elses recommendation on.

1. Exterior- I like the G better. Rear end of the BMW sucks
2. Interior-G. Agreed. 3. Acceleration-335i, but both are phenomenal. 4. Handling- Pretty even. Even the car mags agreed the G was no slouch. Are you really going to EVER drive these vehicles in such a way as to notice a difference? 5. Price- G. Can be significant the more options you add. 6. Performance Potential- 335i. True, but is the stock performance enough for you? 7. Realiabilty- Even, perhaps slight edge to teh G 8. Fun to drive- Well, your opinion here is the only one that matters. If you are going to lease, the 335i is very compelling due to current high residuals, low money factors. If buying, the value of the G is compelling. Which models are you looking at? I think the auto is better in the 335, if that is important to you. No experience with manual in the G, but BMW manual is pretty good too. Personally, I made the decision based on the fact that the G gave me everything I wanted, was an ample performer to me, and saved me thousands over the BMW. Case closed. Both great cars though...

I would go with the bimmer just because the 07 G is still the first year production car. Knowing most 1st gen cars, it will be the one that the company will "improve" upon for the next year. If you want to wait it out, you should definitely wait and see how the G sedan is next year, but as of now, I would go with the bmw. Car is simply amazing, well solid built car. My cousin got a alpine white a few weeks back, and I love driving it.. almost as much as my G

If it were me shopping today, for a sedan I'd go G, for a coupe I'd go BWM, and I have never been a fan of BMWs. Something about the new 335, I don't quite know... I'm scared to go drive one. I might leave G-Mama on the lot. |

Great thoughts, comments, points etc...
I was never a big BMW fan, but the 335i is intoxicating in the overall performance aspect. Looks- OK Interior- somewhat ugly in my opinion BUT, the car keeps calling my name. I am 65/35 in favor of the BMW right now. Man, if the G37... 350h.p.+++ were out I would jump on it! |
