From a quick search I did on M3forums.com, there are several options. Look up the K&N 57. There's also the "AFE" intakes, you can take a look at those.
K&N 57
AFE Stage 1
AFE Stage 2

If you're looking for the best performance per dollar ratio, they seem to think the stock intake with a "Streamline" filter.

If he's a brand name whore, some of those members believe the Dinan CAI is usually a good bet, but it comes with a big price.

Hope that gets you started.

People say the K&N + Software gets some really good HP gains. The AFE and some others are 2-3 times the price of the K&N, which you could spend on SW instead.

I have the K&N and it makes more of a mid-range growl than stock. I still miss the G35 exhaust note though!!!!

$600-$800 is unfortunately the cheap end of the spectrum. E46 M3 intakes range from $300 - $4,000...

It won't. It's an OEM BMW M3 CSL part. Requires some unobtainable software also to make it worthwhile.
