.Ideas on an M3.

I am seriously considering buying an e46 M3. It would be a 6 speed, and would be a DD/track car. If I get one, I am going to make some changes right off the bat.

I would remove the rear seats and build a cage for the rear. The reason I dont want a full cage is because it is more dangerous to have a cage up front on the street because you can headslap it in an accident. I would also remove the front seats and install some Racetech seats (have them in all our race cars and can get a deal) with 5pt harnesses.

I do quite a bit of racing, but with the race cars based in Florida, and me living in Washington state, its hard to go out for test days in the race cars. I want this car to be able to go run at the track locally.

Does anyone know much about these cars? Anything I should look for? Any years bad?

Any shared knowledge would be great!!

I don't know to much about the Beamers. My brother has an 04 M3 w/ SMG package. He did a few small mods such as exhaust, headers and intake. and chip from Dinnan. He had it tuned by some Beamer gear heads here. If you have a specific question let me kow and I willa sk to see if he can help. Here I also see some kid driving one with a roll cage, wheels and exhaust. I know the exhuast makes the car sound extrmely aggressive.

What good is a car if you cant put wear and tear on it and have a hell of a good time doing it?

I am selling my F350 and my offroad truck if I do this. They are both my life, but I am ready to part with them if need be.

Jonathan from MillaRacing has a DD/Track E46 M3. His site is down (Millaracing.com) right now. I would defiantly contact him. He knows a lot about that car. The only picture I could find shortly was at

If you are going to track it are you looking for a car with less weight (ie, no sunroof or extra packages, etc)? Good choice on the 6 speed

Some known problem areas of the M3 to check out are:
-the differential. drive the car in a tight circle and listen for rubbing. Rubbing sound is not good.
-for earlier cars make sure the bearing recall was done. This is free so I don't know why anyone wouldn't have done this.

The car came w/ 18's or 19's. 18's would probably be better for the track and tires would be cheaper. If you get a car and part it out, let me know what you're selling! I could use a new shifter knob+boot.

Trackmagic,
I hope that really helps. I can’t even explain to you what he knows. My mistake about that PM. I though you had the g35gt race car.

Side Question-

If you are going to build a track car do you rebuild the engine? If so, would it be smarter to buy an E46 with 100k on her, because you plan to rip everything out and replace it? I have always wondered this.

Why not get a Z4M Coupe? I love that car. That'd be my choice over M3 for a Track/DD ride. But The M3 is definately a sweet ride as well! Go for it! If you do do it, I want to check it out!
