A good, cheap, reliable car to mod?

Modding the G is too expensive, so i figured i should buy something cheap and mod it!

I am planning to learn how to do engine work on this car, like adding intake, exhaust, simple bolt-on things, oil change, rotor work, suspension...etc. I would like to keep it a Japanese car as parts seems to be easier to locate.

Any suggestion for things under 5-8k? I was thinking 300zx-TT or 240zx, skyline GT-S, 1994 toyota celica GTS...etc

going to get a manual this time!

standard FTW!!

If you need cheap and easy to work on, then forget the 300zxTT. Probably a 240sx with a SR20DET swap would be the one IMHO. You can buy one modded already and tinker with it.

Are the parts for 240sx cheap in general?

Even worse from an "easy to work on" standpoint.

If you want cheap, stay away from ALL of the V6 or inline 6 twin turbo cars.

I had a 300ZXTT. It was excellent and very reliable, but very expensive to mod. Same holds for a 3000GT or Supra TT.

Think about it. You'll need 6 fuel injectors, 2 intercoolers or at least one gigantic and equally expensive intercooler, 2 turbos or a large expensive one for the Supra, dual exhausts which cost 2x as much as cars that have a single exhaust, etc.

Stick with the 240. I had a 240sx and to this day, it was the absolute funnest, easiest car to drive fast. It was super tossable, you could kick the back out with ease, but the car wouldn't get you in trouble. Best of all, there are a TON of mods available for that car and you can make it easily as fast as any of the TT Japanese cars around.

Thanks for the feedback, this is exactly what i need to not choose cars with turbos!

Which gen of 240sx should i get? S13?

Stay away from 3000gt Vr-4 trust me those cars not mod friendly at all. Plus there very heavy. I had a 95 & a 99 vr-4.

I say go with an SRT4. They can be had for a decent price, and are just crazy inexpensive to mod. You just have to deal with the FWD aspect.

Toyota MR2 Turbo are pretty quick out of the box, and are easily moddable. You can get a nice one for $5k or so and it'll handle like a go-cart. That is still the car I want for a "project"
