rx-8

I got a few questions, is buying a used rx-8 like buying a lemon? I hear they're bad, but I mean the prices are real good. Sure it might be slow, but I really like it..Just wondering, is the insurance for the rx-8 expensive, anyone know where it usually falls between, is it almost the same as the G?

I've heard the opposite. At 40k miles the engine is a ticking timebomb...waiting to give up.

Same here, well at least with the old rx-7. Something about the apex seals wearing out.

yeah...maybe what I was hearing was about the RX-7. For some reason I thought that all of their rotary engines were messed up.

What happened to the rotary engines?
I had a 2nd gen with 115k miles and the engine was still strong and no leaks.

The RX-8 is a really fun car to drive.
Sure it's much slower than the G but it's not slow at all.

Rotary engines are as reliable as poiston engines if you maintain it properly

I was speaking to the owner of an '05 with about 18k miles on it. It uses half a quart of oil for every two tankfuls of gas or around 500 miles total. I know they burn oil but don't know if this consumption is normal or not.

Slurp....

The Rotary engine on the RX8 is designed to spin 2 full revolutions before the spark plugs even ignite -each and every time you start the engine. That rotation is for nothing more then allowing the oil to get into the "cylinder" so that under combustion the spin on the Rotor will not be in a dry state. I think the total capacity is 7 quarts, and Mazda has said numerours times the engine does not "burn oil", it is the design that requires lubrication that is a big draw on the reserve. They claim you will never run out of oil inbetween changes if you keep on their schedule, which is over 5k i think.

Now that said, any engine that 'uses' oil into the cylinder daily and looses it to regular day in day out driving to me says it is burning oil, but its a fine line between design and whatever you want to call it. Either way, even the long term cars at the magazine demo pools keep quarts in the trunk as they have said you have to add every month just in case. Better safe then sorry...

Other then that, I have herd the AC is underpowered and that some dealers have installed factory enhancements to fix the cooling capacity, but they are fun fast cars, I drove them on several test runs, and they are very attractive, no cookie cutter design here at all. Good luck whatever you choose.

I run with the IndyRX8Club. No, they are not slow...they are quck little bastards. Google the club, register, and tell "Flyboyindy", "max5roadster", or "kip ky eva" that Steve with the G35 sent you and they will school you on the "8". They are nice guys and know every detail about those cars.
Good luck.

Yeah, it's a great car all around. They aren't very quick but they handle extremely well. I'm guessing the RX-8 will be lower than a G in terms of insurance but that's just my prediction.
