6-Speed or not?

Hi guys,

I am new to the forums...only been a few months, but I am looking into buying a G35 coupe soon. I really wanted the 6-speed manual one because I've never owned a stick car yet. However, I've heard from mutual friends that own it and reviews from automotive authorities that the 6-speed is not good.

I am going to use this car as my daily driver and would like to keep it for at least 5 years or more. So, suggestions or feedback on this topic. Will I be able to withstand the rough clutch. I'm not a meathead, I'm a slim guy that can't squat 500 pounds or something by the way. haha

Alright, let me know...any feedback would be awesome...

I can always go get a used RSX Type S or Civic Si because Hondas have awesome transmissions.

Also, I head Bimmers have terrific manuals, but I can't deal with the maintenance and cost to repair since I'm going to be fresh out of college and not rolling in money.

6MT or nothing!

If your using the G as your "to have fun" vehicle, then its a must.

Gotta love the fun factor of it.

I know it's really really hard to believe, but you can actually have a little bit of fun with the 5AT too.

But I still wish I had the 6MT though.

The 6mt is not one of the smoothest or easiest to operate. It is however not bad. The clutch engagement point is very high and has a tendency to be more of an off/on switch. It's not "rough" and does not require a lot of effort to disengage. The shifter has fairly short throws but is somewhat notchy and vibrates a little more than others in this class. That said it is a fairly robust unit that serves the utility okay.

The MT adds a little more fun to car other than having to drive in stop and go traffic.

Enjoy the new car.

I've got the 6MT, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

The clutch does grab pretty high, and the range is very narrow, compared to other MTs I've driven. But you get used to it pretty quick. The MT makes the car so much more fun than the ATs I'd get as dealership loaners.

Get the 6 speed, you won't regret it

I'm sure there's other important factors that made you choose an auto over 6mt.

I might end up in the same position anytime in the future...but in that case, I'd have both a 6MT and a auto paddle-shifter sports car

As of now, I have no need for automatics.

6mt all the way man. whoever told you that 6mt is not good (assuming in general) is just jealous. they dont want you to get a 6mt before them. manual transmissions is generally fun to drive. automatic transmission is boring IMO. all it is, it's just shift into drive and gas. whereas the manual transmission, you gotta build a relationship with your car. get used to your car. then love your car. a lot more than just driving

always keep in mind too

daily driver = usually the only car you have or your other car is sexy, but it drinks gas like kool-aid

given that this is going to be your first manual car, traffic and hills are not fun.....
