Would you Jeep?

I've never owned an american car, much less a jeep. We are looking into a very capable vehicle for camping, and soon will be needing something to pull a small boat (one day next year I plan to buy a runabout).

I have absolutely no experience with them. But I am looking into the 4-door Unlimited. I hear that they have great heaters and relatively good AC. And they get about the same gas mileage as we do... But the thing that strikes me is that you can upgrade/mod these to your hearts desire.

Anyone own a jeep or have experience with them? If you have the 4dr, do you wish you bought the 2dr? Vice-versa? Anything you would definitely mention to a new owner?

(This model, but hoping for Black)

TIA

Thats what I am hearing. Its just that several things harness our decision, including depreciation, build quality, etc. Its tough too walk up to a jeep person and grille him on the vehicle's integrity. And at the same time, its tough to beleive anything the Jeep dealer has to say.

We use the old early 90s MODELS in our junkyard and they are tuff as nails. As for the newer ones. I really dont know. But its a jeep. Expect a little ruggedness. Dont expect a G35.

Believe me...Jeeps are nothing to laugh at when it comes to reliability(IMHO that is...). I have never had any problems with my 4dr(Def. glad I went with a 4dr) 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4, I have taken her off road many times and not necessarily for the point of mudding or rock crawling either. My Mother's family grew up in the country and there have been many times where I have taken her out in the fields to get around and haul stuff. Sometimes when I have gone camping with my cousins we have been able to get back to a good fishing pond about a mile or so off the beaten path through some shallow creeks, etc. As far as interior quality I cant say its the best(older OR new for that matter), but I personally don't think Jeeps were built to be pretty/luxury road vehicles and most people who buy them for their real purpose usually don't mind (I don't at least). I've modded mine with a 5.5 in. Rubicon Express suspension lift with 33 in. BF Goodrich Mud Terrains...needless to say...she gets me around Can't say I have ever been a fan of the newer Wrangler style 4dr jeeps. I would recommend maybe a 2001 4dr Jeep Cherokee Sport 4x4...you can prob. find one for around $6400-$9000 and still in excellent condition with decent miles. However, If you really like the Wrangler style look then maybe look into a used(yet newer) Wrangler 2dr with a 6cylinder (4cylinder as you can imagine is pretty much useless for the purpose you are wanting). Any more questions or concerns just PM me, I'd be more than happy to help...

Never had a Jeep Wrangler, but I've rode in a friend's and it was very stiff and rough on the road. Felt every bump, dip, pothole, etc....But I guess that's why they're good for off-roading I'm not a "Jeep" fan, as I had too many bad experiences with Chrysler products, but I haven't heard anything bad about the Wranglers, so go test drive one and see how you like it. You want to make sure it has enough towing capacity for the kind of boat that you eventually want to get (I don't know what they're tow rating is)....Good luck with your decision.

You guys make good points. I do know they aren't as luxurious as the g. Thats a given. In fact we looked at many other brands, some econo, some mid-luxury, and concluded that this was the one to get us off road if we ever needed. Plus the modding may be fun. I know how you feel bradimus, but I actually like it just as much if not better than the 2 dr. Wrangler. Maybe its just the rugged look that is attracting me.

I have been in a few Wranglers to know they are not fun to drive so much on the road as well. I guess I will just have to drive one for the weekend to see if I can stand the "jeep-ness". I would assume the ride would be better than the 2 dr... maybe more truck-like.

Take a look at the new Hummer h3 with the 5.3 V8 and active fuel management.

It will have much better reliabilty than the new jeeps, faster, better looking IMO and more space, plus will tow your boat with ease.

Its not gonna be like the old H3 with that ***** 5 cylinder.
