Re: $95k for New VW!

The joke just got even funnier! I thought 85K was a joke for the Phaeton, but hmmmm, in all fairness...Q45 (62K), Acura NSX (95K), Lexus SC430 (80K) LS430 (75K), need I go on?

Re: $95k for New VW!

Check out this other article from the same site. Here's the interesting quote:

"This is one expensive, overdone and way overweight Volkswagen. If that's what you're looking for, buy in and along with it you get almost G35-good styling..."

Re: $95k for New VW!

The LS430 is $55k base and $69 with every option (Ultra Lux package - better equipped than the $90k Phaeton).

The SC430 is $62k base and $65k with every option (basically spoiler and runflat tires).

The LS430 is incredible value for money and I almost got one before I remembered I am not grey haired yet. Best of all the bazillion gadgets and motors in the Japanese luxury cars will probably work for 10 years or more - I would be surprised if some things didn't stop working in the Phaeton after 10 weeks. I believe the both Autoweek and C&D had problems with their brand new Phaeton electronics.

You've got me thinking now. How about a G35 sedan to haul your family and friends, a Z roadster for dates, and a Mini Cooper to fetch the grocery. All for the price of one fancy VeeDubWub.

Re: $95k for New VW!

The Phaeton isn't really supposed to sell, it's supposed to improve the image of their other cars by association. VW already owns Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche, and Audi, so they already have plenty of the luxury car market.

But I really think cars like the Viper, NSX, and the new GT40 are the smarter way to do this. Those cars are unmistakable. There are a whole bunch of other cars out there just like the Phaeton.

Re: $95k for New VW!

I believe Porsche is still independent, although they do have commercial as well as historical ties with VW, as evidenced by the 914 (VW engine), 924 (Audi engine) and the shared platform for the Toureg/Cayenne. What I don't understand is VW's willingness to allow its various divisions to compete. For example, the latest Audi supercar is nothing more than a decontented Lambo, and VW's move upmarket using the same chassis must not make Audi very happy. The brands are starting to blend together to the confusion of consumers. Compare that with FIAT's approach for Ferrari/Maserati/Alfa Romeo. Each is in a distinctly different, yet prestigious, category.

Re: $95k for New VW!

pricewise it matches pretty well with a fully loaded Jaguar XK-R. even though thats a Ford I'd have to say its not a fair fight.

Why wouldnt they release this as an Audi? Audi is supposed to be VW's luxury line. I bet if they put this V12 in a A8 and called it an A12 it would sell much better.

Re: $95k for New VW!

It is indeed puzzling that it's not being sold as an Audi. What VW fails to grasp is that the dealership experience is as important as the cars themselves when you're dealing in the luxury segment. Although quite a few of the Audi dealers are dual with VW, they need to distinguish Audi from run of the mill Golfs and Jettas made in Latin America.

Re: $95k for New VW!

Actually I recall reading that someone had asked VW why it wasn't sold as an Audi and their reply was that Audi is a luxury-sport brand targeting BMW. Their intention with that this vehicle would increase the VW image to compete with Mercedes.

Re: $95k for New VW!

As I see it, BMW competes with Mercedes Benz anyway.

Re: $95k for New VW!

2 things folks-
It is being sold as an Audi- A8, except the A8 is aluminum rather than steel, thus reducing weight in a big way. Same chassis though.
Porsche is owned by VAG- Volkswagon Auto Group, along with the others mentioned plus a whackabunch of others in other parts of the world, such as junk like Skoda, if you can imagine.
