I am not a fan of Domestic cars what-so-ever, I liked the C6 Corvette enough to actually pay a little attention to it. If any car or cars can change my mind and make my next purchase a domestic model it will be the Challenger of the Camaro. Umm, 425HP RWD V8 and starts under $40K, wow!!

Starting at $37,000 for the Challenger SRT8 is too much money for what it is. It's a hot car, but I would never ponder paying that much money for it.

It starts at $40,095, not $37k.
The Challenger looks good, but all the other Dodges are looking like they came from the 1980's, especially the Avenger.

With the Mustang Bullit and the Challenger out now, I smell a remake of Bullit!!!

If you wanna dance, you gotta pay the fiddler, right? Some people think paying 52K for a M35 is insane. I've never ordered a car before, but I will look into what all it involves over this next weekend. I do like the car, and the cost isn't a big concern to me. The only concern that I have is that there is no mention of a manual trans being offered, initially. Orange doesn't do much for me. I had a Black Maxima SE back in 1991, so I'm not going there again. The only one left would be the Silver one. If I can get that matched with a manual trans, I'll put my order in!

M35 starts at 43k. I'm guessing yours is fully loaded.

Adding options to the Challenger STR8, and it might get you near mid 40's. (According to a few reviews, it will have to get the mandotory gas-guzzler tax of 2k). For that, you can get yourself an 08 Corvette C6, which would destroy the SRT8 in every performance catagory.

I believe it costs $40k with the $2k gas guzzling tax. The initial report of $38k was w/o the tax. Considering the costs of performance cars these days, that sounds about right to me. The non srt version will probably be the better buy, though.

You're right. Initial cost was $37,995, and adding the 2k tax gets you to 40k. I'm sure they will have limited, but available options that would, if the buyer decides to get, add another $3k-4k.

Has Chevy announced any prices for the Camaro SS? I would assume that they would try to keep it well under 40k, seeing how the base C6 Corvette starts at 46k (obviously a different market). And seeing how the modern LS series engines are so efficient in terms of gas, I doubt Chevy has to worry about a gas-guzzler tax.

I wonder if the SS would get the LS2 or new lS3?

The Camaro won't start production until Feb 2009! They are going to be quite late to the retro muscle/pony car party. I don't think they would announce pricing for another year at least.

I knew if I kept looking hard enough that I would eventually find an answer. I just finished a "live chat" with a Dodge rep. I specifically asked about the transmission(s) that will be available on this SRT8. They told me that they will all be an "Auto-stick." Essentially, a 5-speed automatic with a manual mode. Here we go again. I can easily see this thread going to an "auto vs manual" war again like the G35 coupes have been doing for the last 4 years. (Hopefully not!) Back to the trans, I think that I could live with one. Just a quick FYI.

Look below, the first "batch" will be auto.

"The Challenger was originally expected to be offered with a manual transmission and V8 engine only, but Automotive News has reporting that the first 5,000 units will all be SRT8 models with an automatic transmission. In addition, these first car will begin production as early as March 2008 and will be sold as 2008 model year cars.

.........R/T models will come equipped with a 5.7L V8 and buyers will have the option of a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. The SRT8 model adds a 6.1L V8 and can be mated to a five-speed auto or six-speed manual. A 6.4L could show up in the SRT model as soon as the 2010 model year...."

$40k + $5+K dealer markup ... definitely not worth it and I'm not a huge fan of this retro era we're going through.
