Big turbo, check. AWD, check. Project DSM.

I figured you guys don't see too many big turbo 4 cylinder cars so I decided to share. I enjoy showing this car off more than my G.

This is my gem, a 1996 Eclipse GSX, the turbocharged AWD model for you non-DSMers. The only work I did not do myself was bore and hone the block. All parts selection, assembly, and fabrication was completed by me.

So far I have only run up to 33psi of boost, and the only fuel I have used is E85, I truely havn't scratched too deep into the surface of this setup yet and can't wait to get home and fill the tank with some VP Import and turn the boost up.

It made ~615hp at the wheels at 27psi with a terrible airflow metering issue. Once I got around that, the car probably picked up 100hp at 33psi. I have a few insane MPH timeslips, 10.7@144mph on 215/45/17 sumitomo htr+ all season radials, that was my 3rd pass ever with this setup. That run net me 7.2@107mph in the 1/8th mile. 2 days later at a different (though only 1/8th mile) track I managed a 6.85@114 with better driving. The car has a 9 sec pass in it at 150+mph once I get more seat time and some safety equipment since I got kicked off the track the last time. Car weight is about 3300lbs with me in it. I drive it quite frequently on the street exactly how it goes down the track.

Short mod list.

2.0L .020" over with Ross pistons and Groden aluminum con rods.
Headwork, fancy valves, springs, and cams.
Modified aftermarket intake manifold for a Q45 throttlebody (this is the infinity post content)
GT4202R turbo, yes, it spools long before the 10k redline.
Straight cut dog engagment transmission gearset, aftermarket axles.
PTT twin disc clutch.
4" turbo back exhaust, the first bend kicked my butt.
DSMLink. (engine management)
1600cc injectors and 3 walbro 255hp pumps. (2 parallel intank, 1 inline)

The nitrous is NOT hooked up, nor was it for any track or dyno runs to date.

Those are the major things, any other questions I'll answer as they come in.

On to the pictures.

Looks harmless enough doesn't it?

Some engine building.

Some turbo porn.

There's that first exhaust bend.

Front mount IC.

3.5" upper IC pipe and Q45 throttlebody.

HKS copy exhaust manifold.

Going to the track.

Here are a couple of videos, one driving around with a "crashbox" and the other is a WOT run.

Sunday drive

Wide open throttle run, ~615whp.

Comments welcome, I hope you liked the pictures.

awesome man! i've always loved 2g ecplipse's. I had a 97 GST back in the day but never got around to modding it like i do the G. I'd love to pick up a 99 GSX somewhere down the line.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I also do all my own tuning. With the weight and trap speeds, I estimate it to be over 700whp as it sits. That video doesn't give any idea of how the car is now.

I talked to tech after they told me to slow down and told me I was done racing for trying to go faster. (long story, another race team got mad that I was going the same MPH as their 150K race car with 4ft of rubber under the rear end) They told me I need the following to be able to come back to the track.

Fireproof jacket, pants, and I believe gloves and shoes.
Neck brace.
Roll cage. (I have this, I just haven't installed it yet)
Window net.
Harness.

The best one was saved for last...

Parachute.

Everyone was amazed that a car with real street tires, $2.20 a gallon fuel, full exhaust, and an inspection sticker could lay it down like that. I had a fan following and they were cheering and making all kinds of noise for me when I came back the return road after the last pass. The one owner of the track even patted me on the shoulder through my window while picking up my timeslip and told me I was "the baddest motherf#%&@# here."

Good times!

I will drive it on the street with the chute hanging off of the back of the car too.
