BMWs smell.

I went to the BMW dealership this weekend to look at BMWs, and after browsing their 4 floors of new and used cars, i just got sick of sitting in them.

Their 'new car smell
doesnt smell good, it literally gave me a headache. The interiors are so boring compared to an infiniti (and im talking every BMW.)

Sure the features are fun and stuff, but jeez, it was like, i'd love the car, get out and see how much it cost and be like

Dunno if anyone else notices this?

I still love the 5 series though.

I'll give you guys that. The trunk smells even worse. I bought my '02 M3 in '05 and the trunk still reeked of crayons. The interior, however, smelled of fine nappa leather. It just needs to age, like a fine wine or nice steak.

One way you can often recognize a new car when you're riding in it is that distinctive 'new car smell' - new materials used in the car's construction that are still giving off odors. Studies in Australia have suggested that far from being pleasant, those odors can be toxic.

Researchers found high levels of air toxic emissions in new motor vehicles for six months and longer after they leave the showroom. Measurements made during the study found total volatile organic compound concentrations were initially very high, up to 64,000 micrograms per cubic metre.

Controlled exposures of human subjects by other researchers to a 22-compound mixture at concentrations of less than half this have produced effects within minutes, such as discomfort, drowsiness, fatigue, eye/nose/throat irritation, and headaches.

Air toxics found inside new cars during the study and the effects they may cause included:

Benzene - a known human carcinogen for which an annual exposure goal of 16 micrograms per cubic metre has been recommended in the UK
Acetone - a mucosal irritant
Cyclohexanone - a possible human carcinogen
Ethylbenzene - a systemic toxic agent
MIBK - a systemic toxic agent
n-Hexane - a neurotoxic agent
Styrene - a probable human carcinogen
Toluene - a central nervous system dysfunction agent
Xylene isomers - a foetal development toxic agent
Researchers suggest that to reduce exposure to this toxic cocktail, people who buy new cars should make sure there is plenty of outside air entering the vehicle while they drive for at least six months after the vehicle has been purchased. They say that the ultimate solution would be cars with interior materials that produce low emissions.

Maybe this is why BMW owners are so high on themselves...

I was at the carwash today and started talking to my friend about this 07 BMW 325i that was going through after my G.

I started to comment on how that particular model was a waste of money and how owners usually buy them just so they can have a "BMW" and there are many other better alternatives on the market (C class, G35, TL, hell i'd take a new Saab 9-3 Aero) but this guy by us just kinda started walking away slowly. i go out and wait for my friend, the guy drives byin what do you know, the 325i, and rolls down his window and says "After buying this car, im really regretting not getting the G35. I just really wanted a BMW at the time."

IM DEAD SERIOUS LOL

That is one thing I have never liked about BMW's... I can not stand the smell inside, it always smells the same in every BMW I've sat in & I can't stand it!

I had a 2001 325ci, but this was before the G35 was around. At the time and based on what I had paid for it with military discount, there was nothing that could compete.

There's no such thing as an '07 325i, not in the US anyway. So unless you were in Europe...myth busted. Nice try though.

And no fool sans a Saab whore would take a 9-3 Aero over an '07 328i. Granted I'd never purchase a 328i myself because I agree that for the money, it's not worth it. If you're gonna buy a 3er, get a 335i as that's where the fun's at. But still, a Saab 9-3 Aero over a 328i, oh please.

Go sit in an Audi. It has classy written all over the inside.

BWM interiors are functional (well, used to be functional until iDrive came along), but they are by no means classy. iDrive has gotten better since its original iteration, but it still isn't perfect, and with that, non-iDrive BMW interiors are very drivercentric, but they lack any sort of panache or pizazz. A bit too straightforward if you ask me which wouldn't be a problem if BMW were still building Ultimate Driving Machines, but their pig heavy M cars sort of make an uber drivercentric interior seem counterintuitive. If your vehicle's performance are losing focus on what made them legends by going softer, or "growing up" as so many magazines like to put it, why haven't the insides "grown up" as well?

I will also agree that Mercedes-Benz interiors "ain't all that" either. Their gauge cluster leaves much to be desired, and their center stacks need to lose that stupid phone keypad. One of the things MB does well though (BMW also does this very well) is dark wood trim.

As for high line Japanese interiors, Infiniti has a lot to work on. The EX is a step in the right direction. The M also has a very nice layout and interior, especially the center stack. However our gauge cluster while very readable looks tacky next to the cluster of a Lexus. Our matte wood trim also blows balls. However, our piano black wood trim = sex as does our aluminum trim. They're all different, but the aluminum trim in the G, M and EX are all pleasant to look at and nice to the touch, especially the Ms.

That being said, there is no "perfect interior." But if there's one company that comes close, it's Audi. They simply know how to conjure up the perfect combination of sport and class. It's expected in a sporty car like the RS4, but anyone who can make aluminum and metal look sexy in a large luxury saloon like an A8 gets a thumbs up from me.
