Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

Try edmunds.com for info on used cars back to about 1990.

If I'm not mistaken, that was the same car as the Ford Probe of that era, and the GT versions had turbocharged I4 engines. At least on the early 90's models.

Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

If it was a mystere (same chassis as gen 2 probe), it was a 160 hp v6. (I don't know how they could make so little power with that engine, it was lame, and really not a willing engine.) If it was an old mx6, it was 146 hp turbo inline 4, with tons of lag and gobs of torque steer when the boost poured in. But both had pretty good thrust since the cars weren't too heavy (somewhere around 2800 lbs, so more than 600 lbs lighter than the G). If you were ready and waiting for a go, neither in stock trim held a candle to the Gs performance today. And if you thought there was hardly any headroom in the G...

Cheers for the info. I was just curious, I was just pulling away at a light and he came flying past me and seemed too be accelerating at a hell of a rate. I didn't race him, but was surprised how that car could pull so hard, or at least that was my perception.

Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

Same car mechanically as the Ford Probe. The V-6 model was only a 2.5L, that's why 160hp. This was before variable valve timing became common.

A very few rare turbo 4 bangers were modified extensively to produce upwards of 300hp, but they are very rare. Most owners didnt bother with that kind of mod money.

Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

The older MX-6 Turbo had a 2.2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder. I used to own one. Although it was rated at only 146 hp, the car magazines stated that it probably was underated and had more like 160 hp/ 190 lbs-ft torque. Torque steer was bad, but it would keep up with my friends Camaro.

Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

I used to own a 93 MX-6 with 5 speed manual tranny.

It was the last bodystyle before they were canceled. It was a fairly quick car for it's low HP rating, simply because it was so damn light. They ran mid to high 15's in the quarter mile and were good for a mid 7 second 0-60 time.

The next older bodystyle ( which ended in 1992) had a totally different engine, but was turbocharged. I'm not too sure of the performance numbers of that model though...

Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

I had a 93 MX6 V6. The power was underrated, I ran 0-60 in 6.9 sec. It was rated at 164 hp. The power band on the engine was almost flat because of the Variable Induction Renassaince(VIR). Plus it only weighed a little over 2700 lbs.
Also, don't selep on a modded 1st gen turbo. It's easy to get a lot of power out of them.

Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

Years ago, I test drove both the MX-6 and a 4th gen Prelude VTEC. The MX-6 had its nice points but I felt like a regular sedan.... the Prelude felt more like a go-cart. Guess which I picked.

Re: Info on Mazda MX-6?

Ihad both a 2nd and 3rd gen Prelude. as a big Honda fan at the time I wanted a 4th gen but the 6 to me felt smoother more refined at the time. The 6 is a lot like the G in that the feel was deceptive because of a good baance of luxury and sport. Not to take anything away from the Prelude which was also a great car. The 6 actualy out performed the 4th gen Prelude on the skidpad. To date however I think that the 3rd gen Prelude looks better than the 4th gen. Looks-wise the 4th gen prelude and the 1st gen Prelude are my least favorite for its time.
