CAI on a turbo car is kinda like taking a cold shower before someone throws you into a fire. You are still going to get very hot, very quickly.
The air is going into glowing red hot turbos and then being pressurized (even more heat). What really matters is how well you cool the air down after it comes out the turbos (intercooler) rather than the temp of the air going into the turbos. Ever felt the stock air filter box on a 335i after the motors warm? Talk about a heat sink! You can't even touch it and it stays hot for hours. That's what the cold air is going into *before* it heads to the turbos. The MSDS is not a 9lb chunk of 1/4 thick plastic. It does not hold heat anything like the stock airbox. And (did not have it on in these pics), the stock vent tube from the snorkle exits right at the mouth of the filter on the MSDS so the cool air coming in exits right into the MSDS filter too.

About 375.00 shipped. It's called the MSDS stage 1.
For those who just have to have cold air to shoot into those red hot turbo's, there's the MSDS stage II (add on for stage 1). The filter comes off and an extension pipe is added that runs down into lower nose of car for CAI. That's a couple hundred more. Of course you have the danger of hydrolocking with that, a longer air pull (more resistance), maintenance hassle (have to remove the front clip to install and when you change the filter), and then you are still going to end up with hot air anyway when you shoot the air into the red hot turbos and pressurize it.

Pardon my ignorance, but I've seen what conditions/climate BMW tests their cars in and for the life of me can't figure out why this modifcation is needed. I mean they test the cars in extreme conditions (ie. 100,000's Miles in -40C all the way to +45C temp.) and hours on end. How could the engineers possibly ignore something so miniscule (400$ mod)?
Having said that, does this addition actually make a difference? Hypoethitically I see your point but any factual results?

looks good, the heat soak should not be that bad, the intercooler will take car of it, do they have upgrade intercoolers yet?

MSDS claims 13 increase in RWHP and +8ft. Lb. increase in RWTQ and has the dynos to back it up, and several other intake makers have dyno's showing about the same increase.
I know that sounds like BS but apparentally the stock intake is highly restrictive at the snorkle end and simply can't let enough air in to feed the turbos, add more boost and it becomes even more of a problem. If you want to see just how restrictive, the pic below shows one side of the factory "snorkle". There's two of slots like this, the pic shows one of them. The slot is maybe an inch high and 6 inches long. That's 6 square inchs. You've got 2 slots like this so you get 12 sq. inches of intake area. That's 3x3 square. Not very big to feed two separate 3 inch tubes feeding two turbos is it? Now compare that to a cone filter that's about 6 inchs wide and 12 inchs long unrolled. That's 72 sq. inches. Now double that because it can pull air from the outside and the inside. That's 144 sq. inches. That's a 12x12 square. ![]() Guess this was an easy way to make sure the 335i was not faster than an M3 without affecting normal driving. Just put such a restrictive intake on it that if you really gave it the gas it could not pull enough air. The ECU would compensate by leaning out the fuel to keep the f/a ratio right. Then under boost the turbos by about 3lb and shazam. 65+hp and about 60tq. gone and the M3 is now slightly faster than the 335i 0-60 ![]() Not saying the M3 would not out handle a 335i, but you just couldn't have the 335i being faster than the M3 0-60... Something HAD to be done...
