Cobalt SS
Seems more and more manufacturers are attempting to capture the interest of tuners...No pricing available yet, but the SS is the coupe version of the upcoming 2005 Cobalt, he replacement of the Cavalier...The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged Coupe will feature a 205 horsepower Ecotec 2.0 liter, supercharged four-cylinder engine and five-speed transmission...The car rides on 18-inch wheels and performance tires...Anyone else snicker when they see "supercharged" and "Ecotec" in the same sentence?? Along with this, GM is planning on releasing an Ecotec 2.2 liter supercharger kit that will be available through GM dealerships at the end of the year- GM estimates the kit will deliver an 11-pound boost, resulting in 175 horsepower at 5600 rpm, which is a 25 percent increase...Of course, pricing hasn’t yet been set...
If you want to see pictures and get some more info, here's the address: http://www.edmunds.com/future/2005/c...0 .Chevrolet* To me, the SS looks like a Tiburon picked up a pretty little Civic and once back at his Las Vegas hotel, gave her what for...The front end is definitely Cavalier, but also looks Civic-like...The side, to me, is reminiscent of the Tiburon, as is the rear "All the Power in the World resides in the Eyes..."

Re: Cobalt SS
Ecotech engines are really strong actually and can take boost perfectly fine. Whether it'd be a supercharger or a turbo.
Check out http://www.j-body.org/ for more info. I used to be a member there. Honda better pick up their pants with the Civic Si/SiR and do something with it, FAST! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's still a G thang!! |

Re: Cobalt SS
Oh, I know that the Ecotec is nice, I just think it sounds funny to say "supercharged" or "turbocharged" Ecotec...The thought of an "ecologically friendly" or "economy" forced induction engine just doesn't sound completely right, ya know?

Re: Cobalt SS
Hmm...I didn't get to look at the Colbalt at the recent auto show (no one I went with was interested in any Chevy product), but this Colbalt SS looks very nice. I'd say it looks like a Tiburon done right (I hate the front of the Tiburon but think the rear half looks great). The only thing I don't like about it is that Chevy logo on the front. Not bad at all for a pocket rocket type of car.

Re: Cobalt SS
Bah, granted the numbers are getting better, but this looks like factory rice to me. What in the world does a 200hp FWDer need with oversized wheels and a giant wing? I mean sure, a wussy car like a Porsche 911 can get by on 17" wheels, but the beast that is the Chevy Cobalt can only be restrained with 18-inchers, baby! And the wing helps keep those big, powerless rear wheels planted for maximum understeer, while adding necessary drag to slow this sucker down to sane speeds.
More importantly, it doesn't seem to have anything going for it versus a SRT-4. Less power, no LSD (that I've heard of), slightly heavier despite having fewer doors... is it at least going to be cheaper? -Jack Obsidian '03 G35 Sports Coupe (for sale) |

Re: Cobalt SS
Maybe it's my inner riceboy speaking, but I think this Colbalt looks better than the SRT-4.
Then again, I find the Acura RSX a very attractive car, so what do I know... 2004 G35 Coupe Diamond Graphite/Graphite 5AT Premium, Nav., 18" Wheels, Z-Xtreme Hyper Grounding Cables, K&N filter, Clear Corners, 350Z Aluminum Pedals, Sony Ericsson HCB-30

Re: Cobalt SS
1. I think they need to make the rims smaller or the rotors bigger.....WAY TO MUCH GAP
2. They need to just give up on ricer appeal 3. Chevy should stick to what they are GOOD at...American Muscle I have no doubt in my mind that the first one of these I see in my area will have been dropped so low it is plowing dust off the street and it will have neon lights along with a Subwoofer so crappy (er...Loud) that it shakes my mirrors from 4 cars away. After all, those are all mods that net SERIOUS hp increases....and the stickers that are soon to follow from APC, NOPI, NOS, and Pep Boys cut the drag coefficent in half Rick |

Re: Cobalt SS
Speaking of Pep Boys, I was dropping my roommate's car off for diagnosis (ehy, it wasn't my idea or choice) and decided to walk around to look at all the crap they sell...I'm not sure if the giant flame hood decal or the neon pedals that only light up when your foot is pressing it down (umm...how would you see it glow then?) were funnier...Actually, the spinner hubcaps might be the funniest
As far as competition for the SRT-4, I believe Sport Compact Car has the Cobalt at 240HP in their "Rumors & Lies" section, claiming that Checy has decided to bump up the HP to take on the SRT-4 directly...I'm thinking it was a lie "All the Power in the World resides in the Eyes..."

Re: Cobalt SS
And yet another, "here today-gone tomorrow" chapter with GM. I read all about this car in Autoweek a few weeks back. Sorry, but I feel that this will be a very short-lived attempt to rival Japan, IMO. GM will never get it right, and just when you think they have, they'll pull the plug on it.
