Thinking about getting a new DD/Beater car, need your help.

Hey,

My beater car is great, and I have put about 8k miles on it, but it is getting old and is going to need some work done to it soon, so I think its time to start looking for a replacement. The current beater is a 1991 Mazda 626, right now it needs cv joints, new speakers, and a valve gasket, I could easily replace all of those, but I would rather use my tax return on a new beater that gets me to school/work rather than waste it on a set of wheels. After driving the Mazda for about the past 6 months I have decided that the next beater I get needs to have airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). After driving this thing in the snow I see just how important ABS is, and why it is soooo much safer to have it.


My buget for the next beater is about 5,000$, I will spend more if I think its worth is, but that is about the max I want to spend. Almost any car would be an upgrade from my current beater, but I have to give the Mazda credit it has been a great little car.

I have been looking at some of the 1999-20?? Nissan Sentras, and they look like they would make a nice DD car, there are also some in the price range I'm looking for. I would like to find one with a manual transmission as I really would like to learn how to drive stick.

What do you guys think about the sentra's? Also do you know a good forum I can join to find out some more info on them?

Also I'm not set on this car, are there any other cars I should be looking at in that price range.

The only reliable and very nice looking car comes to my mind under that budget is 95-97 maximas 5MT. I have heard they are very reliable.

My 95 maxima was pretty solid, but it was a 5AT. I'm sure you could find a 98-99 altima for that price as well.

I don't think they make the maxima in a 4cyl, so I would prob stay away from that because I need to get good mpg

A Sentra is a great second car. A Honda Civic would also be something to consider.

yea old civics got GREAT gas milage, i think my friend's 93 civic had like 38-40 mpg... but since they are popular cars, they tend to hold their value... Try to look at like a 1999 accord coupe, i've seen some for 6k and it does have a 5spd 4banger....

27-30+mpg, easy to fix, parts are relatively cheap and car is reliable.
