GT-R just got 7 min and 29 sec at the RING!!! Not the V-Spec!

This was annouced today!

- GT-R among the fastest ever production road cars at the ‘Ring’ -

(CASCAIS, Portugal, 1st May 2008) - Nissan today announced that its GT-R supercar achieved a lap time at the infamous Nurburgring in Germany of seven minutes and 29 seconds. Recorded on April 16 and 17, the GT-R used was a base specification car and fitted with the standard Japanese market tires. Driven by GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki, this latest lap time beats the previous fastest time for the GT-R by nine seconds.

The previous best lap time for GT-R of 7:38, also driven by Suzuki, was one of the fastest laps achieved by a production car despite conditions being slightly damp on two corners.

“At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nurburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds.” said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R. “Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere - I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.”

Deliveries of the all-new GT-R began in Japan in December 2007. Sales in the US and Canada start in July and extend to Europe and other markets over the next 12 months.

how long has the car been out and still no independent tester.
Only nissan factory drivers manage to pull out times like these.

I concur. Not only that but the "7:38" was admittedly on cut slicks, yet they ran 9 seconds faster with street tires? Still waiting on the SportAuto Supertest (the only test that counts on the 'ring).

1+ for an indenpendent tester. The car is fast, no doubt. But why hasn't there been any independent testers for the GTR on the ring?

Rumor. The 7:38 was done on stock tires not cut slicks. Remember that was again a communication issue between the editor and the car they ran. It was the stock tires in the pictures when they ran the time.

They have been running the same test they run all the other cars and mark the times down.

i think nissan didn't really set these times... they just figured out a way to make everyone's stopwatch at the track slow down.

No they haven't. Manufacturer testing is not the same as independent third-party testing. The official list of 'ring times comes from the SportAuto Supertest, and they have not had their hands on one yet. Let me ask you this, if Mizuno believed that the GT-R was capable of sub-7:30 times then why has he been quoted as saying that the GT-R is a 7:45 car? Other Nissan engineers have said it as well. After doing some more research I will concede the cut slick issue (you can't deny that they were at the very least R-compounds though). However, there is no irrefutable evidence that this was a base spec car. As a matter of fact Mizuno was also quoted as saying that the 7:38 time was the fastest by a production spec car. IMO that leaves the door wide open for other spec models of GT-R, and not just the base model. I am not trying to take anything away from the GT-R. I'm sure that it is an absolute monster, but do you honestly believe that it is faster than a Carrera GT (which at 605 hp and a curb weight of 3042 lbs gives it a power to weight ratio of 5.03 lbs per hp) and basically as fast as a Pagani
Zonda F Clubsport (with 650 hp and a curb weight of 2712 lbs giving it a power to weight ratio of 4.17 lbs per hp) then you are drinking the kool-aid, IMHO. I just cannot believe that is possible, 480 hp and a curb weight of 3836 lbs gives it a power to weight ratio of 7.99 lbs per hp. I don't care how good your AWD system is, those numbers don't jive.

Actually the former record time in the Carrera GT was witnessed and documented by an independent third-party source (Autobild magazine) Also, Horst von Saurma of Sport Auto ran a 7:32 in the Carrera GT, which leads me to believe the 7:28 is possible. The Zonda Clubsport F time was set by Marc Basseng of EVO magazine.
