According to FreshTarmac.com, this photo was taken in a hangar in Spain. It shows a sleek two-door, probably mid-engined coupe with attributes of the new M3 incorporated into its design, especially the front fenders and hood. The M1 is not based on the 1-series, but instead on this:



1979 BMW M1, the very first M car. The OP is a p-chopped M3. If BMW makes it the M1 will be a 2 seat mid-engine sports coupe, and that car clearly has back seats. Everything from the hood bulge to the hood vents to the side gills to the CF roof says M3. It's a nice chop though, and if the M1 did come out looking more like that than the other rendering I would be quite pleased.
