Supercharged Mustang GT @ 100+mpg.

Hey, all. I'm brand new here. I just signed up this morning after a month of lurking. I'm a current WRX owner that is about to sell the beast and go with a G (still hung up on which year model. I'm a fan of Brembos and my car not losing all it's oil, but could see opting for the nice interior styling cues, more handjobs and whatnot...) I was going through some older threads a minute ago about gas mileage with a G. It looks like the G averages about 19, without gunning it at every stop light.

After reading 4 or 5 posts about gas, I remembered an article about this guy in his Mustang GT getting 85 miles per gallon. I did a search and found out that he bumped it up to 100+.

From what I understand, homeboy here is using electronics on his otherwise traditional push rod motor. He's pushing out around 400 horsepower and maintaining the 100+mpg. Everyone is getting sidetracked with ethanol, hybrids, and electrical cars when guy here has an '87 supercharged 5.0 and is pushing out more than your average supercharged VQ.

There's a local guy here in Salt Lake that is making 80 MPG with homebuilt prototype technology on a 90's Landcruiser and Tacoma. He says he can make a system for virtually any vehicle, but is still in the infant stages of doing so.

Can you imagine 100 mpg in a G? I guess there's light at the end of the $4.30/Gallon tunnel. What do you guys think?

If it truly works, hope it's not bought up by the big Corp monopolies from that guy and thrown in their cobweb pile of other solutions that work. Heard this happen a few times over the years with other sensible solutions. 100mpg would hurt sales/record breaking profits in a certain Industry if you catch my drift. Sad but true and it's happened before. Too many stories I know to type all here.

Welcome btw.

physics is physics. Unless his car has a swept area of almost nil, 100+mpg is impossible.

care to elaborate, wanna explain how much energy is stored in a gallon of gasoline+e85 and how much is needed to overcome drag+friction?

to dumb it down, car engines are roughly 40% efficient in turning the energy in gasoline into motion. Drivetrain losses can be rounded to 15%, so you're getting about 35% efficiency from the gasoline.

multiply the cD of the mustang by the swept area, and you get the frontal area of the car's drag.

The average car, at 60 mph, requires about 20 hp to sustain the speed due to drag/wind resistance.

If you were to cruise at 60 mph on a perfectly flat surface in your G, you'd probably get about 30 mpg. So how can the mustang get 100 mpg? it's older technology, and the supercharger alone is eating up more fuel to run than it takes to sustain a car on the freeway. Does his gasoline magically have 5x the energy?

Sorry I don't really want to dig up my old physics books...

Refer to this article, where they attempt to minimize the effect of drag on a car.

Do you, sweetheart? We're all car junkies, and the thought of not shelling out $60 dollars every week, or a few times a week would be somewhat of a relief, especially when we're not losing any power. I figured it to be fairly relevant and interesting to dorks like us, praying for 20 mpg.

This is the guy's website. Some presume that with the same technology, action guy can get 500 mpg. He's in the middle of a contest for $10 million dollars and is supposedly awaiting patents. Looks like we'll just have to wait it out.

I'm all ears. At this point, I don't need anymore convincing. This pretty much swayed me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eolDE...eature=related
I wouldn't think the stock G35 compares to the STI... But it will.
