Gasoline Cars

Hey everyone. Since more and more carmakers are coming out with hybrids, do you guys think that our gasoline cars will become obsolete in another 5 or 10 yeas. Infiniti is coming out with a G35 hybrid next year and ever the German luxury makers Mercerdes and BMW are coming out with several models this coming year.

5 to 10 years? Absolutely not. Gasoline engines are going to be around for at least another 20, IMO. With the added cost of Hybrids, there are still going to be a lot of people that can't or won't pay their premium and would opt for a standard gasoline car.
Automakers, Ford especially, are close to coming out with gas engines that are vastly more fuel efficient than today's cars. Within the next couple vehicle generations I'd expect to see gas powered cars pushing 40+ MPG, in midsized cars.

Personally, I'm looking pretty hard at diesels. The new Jetta TDI gets 41 MPG, and diesel engines are proven to have amazing reliability and longevity.

Alternative fuels won't be a viable "alternative" until they're cheaper than gas.

Today.....gas is still cheaper (even at $10/gallon like in Europe).

40+ MPG? not if everyone still wants bigger and faster.

There aren't any official numbers out yet, but the 2010 Lincoln MKS will offer Ford's Ecoboost V-6, with 340HP/350pound-feet of torque. That makes power like their V-8 engines with a 20% gain in efficiency over the larger engine. And that's in 1st gen Ecoboost engines. I'd imagine gains could be much better in subsequent engines.

I know it's not much of a change, but hydrogen hybrids are around, and there are kits that do work...
