Re: Chrysler 300c HEMI

A much over hyped very very low tech 2 valve per cylinder engine........nothing like the real 4 valved per cylinder [HEMI] engine of the late 60's.
345 horsepower (5,600 rpm) and 375 lb-ft of torque (4,400 rpm) from 5.7 liters (345 cid*) .

"Seeing all the hoopla surrounding the new Hemi and the previous speculation on whether its displacement was going to be either the nostalgic 354 or 383, I am amazed no one has made mention of what is probably the coolest coincidence of all. The actual production engine came in at 345 c.i.d. @ 345 hp, the exact same specs as the '57 DeSoto Adventurer 345/345 Hemi, the first standard engine to make the 1hp/ci mark (albeit the '56 300 optional HP engine had earlier accomplished the feat). Both preceded the much ballyhooed optional 283/283 hp '57 Corvette engine."

Hope it last better than the 57 Desoto whose displacement it emulates.

Re: Chrysler 300c HEMI

If it wasn't a Chrysler, I'd push hard for my dad to buy it as his next car. He like buying American. However, given Chrysler's quality track record, it might be an iffy buy, at least for the first model year or two. Without regard to reliability, I'd say the 300C is tough to beat. Sooo much power, space, and equipment for such low price (maybe something doesn't add up?).
No, I'd probably never buy one but I have to say it's a damn finen car.

Re: Chrysler 300c HEMI

I think they look great. They remind me of the gangster cars with the chopped windows. Its probably bigger than a car I would buy and I've heard the blind spot is pretty bad but still I think its great direction for chrysler. Chrysler is taking some risks with their styling, crossfire, pacifica, 300c, and its hard to argue that their older cars were better looking.

Ya that car is a beast, it weight a bunch too, it must be fun to turn of the traction and powerslide a bunch because the weight of the car just brings the back around

The original Chrysler Hemi engines never had 4 valves per cylinder. They were always 2 valve pushrod V-8's, just like today's Hemi.

The first Chrysler Hemi came out in 1951, but it was a really expensive option, and they discontinued it by the mid 1950's.

The famous Hemi was the 426 cubic inch Hemi introduced in 1964. Only 11,000 of these engines were built from 1964 to 1971. Which is why any Mopar muscle car with an original factory installed 426 Hemi is worth a lot of money today.

There's nothing wrong with 2 valve pushrod V-8s. They may not be technologically sexy, but they WORK. Variants of the Hemi design are used in top fuel dragsters today. They still use pushrods and 2 valves per cylinder and they produce well over 6,000 hp!!!

I do agree though that they are over-hyping the Hemi name. I mean 345hp out of a 5.7L pushrod V-8 is the same as the LS1 Corvette motor makes with the same displacement. That's good power, but the LS1 has been producing that power since 1997. And the LS6 cranks out 405hp with the same displacement.

The Hemi name is a great marketing tool though. It definitely sells.

Re: Chrysler 300c HEMI

I just took one for a drive today. Solid feel, definitely one of the best Chryslers I've ever driven. Feels big and heavy though. Off the line, I expected more from the Hemi in terms of acceleration. Didn't feel that torquey off the line. I thought it would feel more like sitting in a deep bathtub based on the look outside, but it didn't, even with the seat down.

I like the folding rear seats, and at least it has an integrated key, unlike our Nissan key fobs.

Re: Chrysler 300c HEMI

I have owned a Chrysler product in the past, and it was a good reliable automobile, which I clocked almost 76,000 miles before selling.......
The Hemi is a name they have thrown back from the past, and I'm sure it will evoke intrest in the product line......

The styling is very retro, which seems to be the rage for most american car companies right now. I wouldn't be surprised if their sales of the 300c are good, that they may eventually bump the horsepower and add a sport suspension for the younger market that may be drawn to the car....

I think the car is too big and heavy in its appearance, but the older square styling is growing on me, and I have seen many on the roads since their introduction

Re: Chrysler 300c HEMI

I drove one last month, before I sealed the deal on my G.
Just to big for me. The front dash lookes like a picnic table, the windshield looked like it was 2 yards away.
Straight line perf was OK, but not up to the hype.
