Test drove an Evo

Yesterday, I test drove an Evo (am down to this or the G35 6MT Coupe for purchase). I know it's a different class of car, but that's what it's come down to for me. I was amazed at its acceleration from a standstill as well as acceleration on the highway from about 65 mph. Now, I know the Evo will hand the G35's butt on a platter in a race from a standstill. This comes at a cost though (if you read the Evo forums) because the Evo clutch gets toasted in a remarkably short amount time, even with good drivers. But I'm wondering if the G35 could keep up on the highway. I mean, when I downshifted on the Evo, I felt like Superman - I felt like I could pass anyone (Porsches, Mustangs, bring 'em all on). Could I get the same feeling with the G? Unfortunately, I got to test drive a 6MT only once, and didn't get a chance to try the downshifted acceleration test on the highway. Any thoughts? Any measured times you could point me to (say from like 50 to 90 mph)? BTW, the G35 catches up to the Evo from a standstill at about 140 mph (on www.car-videos.com), but I'm talking more practical speeds.

Thanks

Re: Test drove an Evo

a) Yeah, we roll with evos at speeds, Ive done it to piss off a few 17 year olds here and there

b) Thats when they are stock, one mod they toast us

c) The G isnt a race car and if your considering buying a car to drive like one, go with the evo.

Re: Test drove an Evo

Cool, thanks, that's reassuring. I'm 35 years old and I don't think I've raced anyone from a red light since I was a kid. But I do like passing cars on the highway, and am glad to know that if I do it to a Bimmer, he won't come back and embarrass me. Sometimes just the knowledge that you can hang with the best of them (excluding exotics) is ego-inflating (in a good way). I know the G isn't a race car; and I think it may strike one of the best balances between sporting, comfort, and reliability to make it a true Grand Tourer.

Re: Test drove an Evo

Cars like evo and sti are basically rally cars. therefore, they are really fast in the first aceleration (0-100MPH).. but I think their top speed is not reallly impresive. so, I think it makes sense when you said that 6MT G35 coupe could catch up with an evo at 140 MPH..
The G doesn't have as much pull as the evo in the 0-100 MPH range though..

Re: Test drove an Evo

If you're considering a car like the EVO, get the STi instead. Mitsubishi is in serious financial trouble and may be leaving us soon. They were also just caught covering up defects in the Lancer and several other models rather than making recalls (may or may not affect the Lancer Evo) and have planted spies at courses to void the warranties of anyone who autocrosses or tracks the car (and a closed, asphalt track is pretty much the only place the EVO is superior to the STi).

Bottom line, Mitsubishi is the one Japanese car company you don't want to get involved with right now (well, them and Isuzu), especially considering how Subaru, Nissan and Mazda are all on the upswing.

Re: Test drove an Evo

Trust me. Before Mitsubishi disappears into oblivion, some other company will acquire them. Not unlike Nissan being acquired by Renault. Who knows? Maybe a giant like GM will acquire Mitsubishi; God knows they could use a lesson on how to make a real 4 cylinder motor.

I dont think the buying public should abandon Mitsu cars. With the exception of Honda's VTEC 3G Integras/5G Preludes, Mitsubishi was the only other Japanese make with an exciting sports coupe (2G Eclipse GST-GSX) where all the rest seem to have abandoned the segment until recently.

Peace.

Re: Test drove an Evo

i agree man...i don't think we need to worry about too much about their business...i don't believe they would close up anytime soon...

mitsubishi is one of the biggest corp/enterprise in the world..even thoguh their automotive department hasn't been on top always..but they are doing ok...

mitsubishi was owned by daimlerchrysler for the longest time...and now that daimler sold back their share to mitsubishi just means that mitsubishi is not doing as well as they hope...but whatever done is done...mitsubishi's cars been more and more reliable every single year (still nowhere close to toyota...or even honda...but then again i can argue the same for nissan/mazda)

daimler chrysler wanted to sell back chrysler as well because of its lack of improvements in sales...but are you going to worry about chrysler closing up? probably not since they are so damn huge =) but in my opinion..mitsubishi never really put too much research into their reliablity in their cars....before..though slowly improving and been pretty great in their new models (namely all lancers)

Re: Test drove an Evo

these are totally different cars. the g is a car to drive from new york to los angeles in. the evo is a sprinter. my understanding of them is that they also have lamentable drivelines, and mitsubishi service...

compare the g to the bmw 5 series, and the baby jag. compare the evo to the wrx.

Re: Test drove an Evo

exactly! evos and stis are sprinters; if you want to highway race, get the g--larger engines will inherently do better.

if you want a car you'll track on a fairly regular basis, get the sti or evo. i personally have an evo, and prefer them over stis.

also, if you can wait, later this year the evo MR is coming out. and early next year, the sti in spec c trim is due; it's gonna be a hot time in a few years!

Re: Test drove an Evo

when i said 10k, i meant brand new--the cars you've listed are either

A) blatantly over 10k more than the evo/sti (corvettes)
B) stock for stock, worse performers on a track (miata, e30/e36 m3, mr2, mini cooper)
C) would be more than 10k brand new and inflation notwithstanding.

so try again; stock for stock, 10k, brand new--name 5.
