Re: evo or sti

Really quick answer: The Evo is much more of a no compromise, tossable racer, with better handling and slightly less power. The STI is faster in a straight line, but loses to the Evo on the track, understeers, but may be more of a practical car for the streets overall. They are very similar in a lot of ways and most of the professional articles I've seen say that the Evo is better overall, but by an almost negligible margin.

Re: evo or sti

I like the STI better (looks and performance wise) if only you could get it w/o the wing.

Re: evo or sti

Quick run down...

EVO has more "proven" MOds as the 4g63 has been around for a while. STi's EJ257 is a new engine and has not been tested to the limits. STi is faster straight line stock for stock drivers being equal. EVO handles better because it came as a more track prepared car, however with a few suspension mods the STi can be up there with the EVO or better. Overall they are very very close.

FWIW: I haev been hearing alot of problems with EVOs. Nothing glaring like the WRX's 5 speed tranny problems, but just alot of little stuff...which makes me ? the EVO fit and finish and reliability. The STi has a rock solid tranny (unlike WRX's), but if you pop the clutch instead of slipping it when you launch people have been breaking rear axles and diffs.

I Think it is more of a personal prefrence. IF you can handle the rugged non daily driving of the EVO great, the STi just has a few more "luxury" features that the EVO does not, and it is a bit softer of a ride.

Rick

That all being said, I am going from my modified WRX to a STi.

Re: evo or sti

^^^is that why evos and stis are listed as A stock in SCCA autocrossing? i guess cuz they're so crappy at the track?

and also,

the evo is actually faster 0-60 because it only needs 1 gear change; the sti needs 2.

as for what's better? i bought the evo because of its handling characteristics; power is easy to make on these two cars. handling, however, is trickier to tune appropriately.

stis/wrxs have been known to blow up trannys (not on a large scale, mind you--but noticeable) because their clutches are stronger than the evo's--thus, the load from launches directly impacts the tranny. the evo's clutch goes out in order to prevent the tranny from taking such loads; which is cheaper to fix?

well, the sti doesn't offer sunroof or leather. the evo is now offered with leather. the sti has an optional radio (this may have changed with the 2005 year)--while the evo's is standard. the sti is a better daily driver because its suspension is softer though--and the seats i believe are more comfy (though the evo's positioning is better). overall, you're simply not getting luxury from these cars.

autocrossing in whimpy little shopping mall lots has nothing to do with how trackable a car is.

they are both waaaay too heavy, and too softly sprung to be anything but seriously ponderous.

Re: evo or sti

how many cars do you track stock? several of the cars you listed in the other thread would still lose to the evo/sti stock for stock. if you're talking about mods, then yes i agree: you'll need to do a lot of work. there are few cars that are competitively trackable without mods for the 30k price range the evo/sti are in.

Re: evo or sti

i wasn't meaning "you" when i asked how many cars you track stock. i agree completely that your esprit is an awesome car--and kicks the [censored] out of a track.

a lot of cars in the 30k or less pricerange (new) will have mods if they get tracked competitively.

also, an e36 m3 weighs 13 pounds less than the evo/sti.

Re: evo or sti

no one in their right mind would ever track a new car. unless they had really rich parents.

Re: evo or sti

also, the vishnu evo took 5th place overall of one lap of america and 1st place in class. a wrx took 6th overall.

the evo had about 15k in mods, and of course a full interior.

Re: evo or sti

we could go on and on--you're not going to change your mind, i'm not going to change mine.

i don't know where you get off inferring that enthusiasts that track their new cars need to have rich parents--that by itself is ignorant and extremely shortsighted.

Re: evo or sti

Where do you get your info from. The EVO still holds better 0-60 times, better Quarter mile times and much better track times.
Motor Trend May 2004:

EVO 03: 0-60-4.6.
1/4 Mile: 13.1@105.1
Slalom: 71.4 miles per hour.
Braking: 106 ft.

STI 04: 0-60: 4.9
1/4 Mile: 13.2@104.6
Slalom: 69.1
Braking: 111 ft.

You only need first and second to get to sixty on the EVO"S. The STI needs three gears.
I know many people that have both cars and they say hands down the EVO is a better car. Just my .02's.
