Lightbulb Hyundai 3.8L Lambda V6 vs. Nissan VQ37VHR

I know there's already Genesis vs. G37 threads around, but I thought that Edmunds' dyno-plots of the Hyundai 3.8L Lambda V6 vs. Nissan VQ37VHR were thread-worthy as a stand-alone side-bar.

Here's the test results (source: edmunds.com):

Click the image to open in full size.

I noted a few things...

1. The Hyundai engine shows a huge torque advantage below 4K RPM.
2. The Nissan engine only shows significant strength over 6K RPM.
3. The Hyundai engine shows a harsh transition at 5K RPM (switch to different cam/intake), whereas the Nissan's transition is seamless.

Overall, I'd have to give the edge to Hyundai.

Thoughts?

Assuming they were conducted appropriately, for daily driving, yes. For track, ofcourse not.

I was a little skeptical about the curve of the VQ37VHR in this dyno because 99% of the dyno's I have seen for the VQ37VHR have a very flat curve.

For example:

Nevermind the numbers itself since they are completely different dynos. But the powerband itself is what im getting to. The Edmunds dyno shows a typical VQ37VHR top-end power band but the low end just doesn't seem right.

The fact that the Hyundai drops off in the top end, means there is power to be gained. This motor should do well with some bolt ons/cams/head work.

We already know how much our VQ35DE (revup & non revup) lose power after peak numbers. And even with full bolt-ons and a tune, it rises the powerband up but doesn't really change the fact that it still loses power after redline.

Once you start messing with the internals, of course that can all be changed. But that's true with any car. Internal work can get very expensive though.

Your comparison is way off-base.

The SRT-4 was crap because it was based on the Neon econo-box platform, and was crippled by a cost-cutting FWD drivetrain.

The Genesis Coupe is on a new platform (one which it shares with the Lexus-matching Genesis Sedan), and has a proper RWD layout.

All this "Ya, but it's still a Hyundai." crap makes me laugh. You guys realize there are many who would turn their noses up at your cars and say "Ya, but it's still a Nissan."

But it IS still a Hyundai. I'm proud to drive a Nissan product.

True, but Hyundai is lookin' better and better isn't it....

I consider the new Genesis with the Lambda engine a very good effort.

If they [G37 / Genesis] were side by side with the badges covered and hood opens, I'd still pick the Infiniti. The Genesis will be turned into "Fast and Furious" almost immediately... while the G has managed to keep it's class and change it's shape right as the G35 was getting affordable to 'that' crowd.

AND THAT is what it boils down to... not warranty (hell, who sticks by that), not the salesmen, not the dealer, because in the end it's just going to be you and your car. You can have a quiet, nice ride that feels like you've got something luxurious around you or you can have a wannabe who's interior will be falling apart in 2 years and something a kid has ragged out.

make it less than 7

good try by hyundai nevertheless. As soon as they can improve its engine and suspension, it would be a tough competitor.
