G37 vs 335i

It's been a while since I posted on here. Anyway, currently I am in Iraq and will be returning to the USA a little after September. I am looking at getting either a G37 sedan or a BMW 335i E90. I actually used to own a 2005 G35 sedan and then later traded for the 2008 335i E90. I ended up selling it since I was getting deployed and since being deployed the new G37 has been introduced. Now I find myself torn between which car to get. Both are within about $5500 of each other with the 335i going for $42,000 and a G37 for $36,500. Both will have Navi and sport packages. It's basically a choice now. So, help me out, which would you choose?

I f you can afford the 335I and plan to keep it less than 4 year or 50K miles get the 335. Unless you have plenty of cash and a second car. I usually keep my cars longer than 4 years. I would pass, and have pass on the 335 since the performance difference is not wide enough for me to spend the extra cash. Also maintaining a 335 long term scares the hell out of me financially.

Also BMW dealers are not known for quick repairs so make sure you have a second car or make sure the dealer will provide you with a loaner car as long as your car is in the dealer for service.

I have not driven the 335, but plan to. I drove the G37 sedan yesterday since my '03.5 is pushing 110K and was interested in getting into a new G in the next few weeks. Lets just say I was not impressed at all.

Has 328HP on paper, but I dont know where they are. This car felt no faster than my G and did not handle as well either. The 7 speed auto was always searching and the sportshift mode still had major delay. The only advantage over my current car is that the road noise is improved.

I told him I wanted to drive a 6MT Sport, but he didnt have one. Says they are about 30:1 ratio to the autos and he'll have to call around to find one to test drive.

Anyway, the 335 is going to be my next target. Even if its a bit more expensive up front, they hold value better. Another interesting option is the 335D that is coming. 425 ft/lb of torque and about 25MPG city and 35 highway. Might hold out for that one as gas is going up again for sure.

Bolt-ons? 335 will have more returns.

Leasing? can't go wrong with either

Purchasing? Get the Infiniti.

If you're planning on modding BEYOND bolt-ons, then the G will do better in the long run.

@ Ballistcus: The new car FEELS no faster, because the torque is the same. You feel torque. Horsepower accelerates you. Do a simple matchup, and the G37 sedan will blow away ANY 1st gen G35 that is not FI or a built NA engine. Ask the sales guy to line up with you in a safe area, and tell him to go when you punch it. He WILL pass you, even with the disadvantage.

The 7AT is searching, because it is adaptive to the driver. It's been test driven by multiple drivers, and is trying to adapt to all of them. You're driving with the previous driver's adaptations. Once you put some miles on a G, it will read your mind.

The G is still the #1 car for holding value in its segment, which includes the 3 series. www.alg.com

The car will most likely be kept for longer than 4 years. Which in turn also scares me about the BMW; I have heard bad things about there electronics. I didn't have any problems from my 335i, but of course I didn't really have it long enough to know. on the other hand, my G35 was very nice, but I got very inrritaded over time with the rattles out of a $36,000 car. From what I have read, that doesn't seem to be as big of a problem with the 2009 models. According to Consumer Reports magazine, the 09 G37 sedan is there top pick in every category, which I tend to follow what they say, since the times I haven't the car turned out to be a piece of crap. Anyway, keep the comments coming. Hopefully, I will better narrow this down in July when I go home for 2 weeks vacation.

+1. No bolt ons for the 37 will make it as fast as the 3 with a simple 600 dollar piggyback.

Also, stock for stock, the sport package 3 will out handle the sport package G.

The 37 has the lim slip stock, the 3 does not have an option for that.

The 3 drives better. There's just something about the 3's "feeling" that you notice with enough seat time between the two cars.

It just didnt have the wow factor I thought it would have and the entire package wasn't even close to making me want to give up my current car and "upgrade". I guess its a good thing that I still enjoy my almost 7 year old G.

I think the new 335i's are great looking. However for sport and navi on the 335i you're at MINIMUM 45K and that's not including premium package (leather...) or auto (if you're looking) or anything else. So with premium package probably nearing in on 50K. The G37 with navi sport and premium is around 42k.

Scrap both and go 335d

With respect to BMW's electronics, one has to wonder why stuff like the nav and iDrive system is not included in their extended warranty. It's like even BMW doesn't have faith in their own electronics.

I guess I am not the only one keeping their fingers crossed for a 2010 DI G37.

The G37 will be my next car, I will test drive the 335i for the fun of it but the price differential cannot be justified. I will use my extra dollars for a second car.

Actually, the website I am going through is only for military members and in Virginia I can get a 2009 335i E90 w/Navi, Sport, Auto, and Conveniance packages for just under $42,000. I can get a 2009 Infiniti G37 sedan w/tech, sport, and some other options for just over $36,400. So, the prices are very competitive. I am really up in the air as to what I would like to pick. For me it is coming down to which car I think is better for the long term. I know the 335i is way faster than my G35, but like I said compared to the G37, I don't know. From what the magazines say, it should be close between the two. Probably would come down to driver vs driver. The one thing I would give to the BMW though is driver feel; it just seemed more planted to the ground and overall more of a sports sedan. As Will Ferrell would say from "Anchorman", "I'm in a real pickle".

I have a G37 coupe with everything and I am telling you. If you can get a 335i, do it without thinking
