ahhh makes perfect sense to me now..then why not just call it lotus..i guess its similar to mercury and ford having the same base with diff. manufacturing names

Because it's not a Lotus. It's an electric car built on a Lotus chassis.

Nope. The chassis was designed by the same designer from Lotus though, so you are kinda close with that. As far as the Tesla Roadster chassis being based off of the Lotus, I think they do share a few parts like the steering column, etc... (although very, very few) but the design had to be completely different due to the added weight of the electric motor, battery, etc... If you made everything fit onto a Lotus chassis, the weight distribution would be completely off, so everything had to be redesigned.

And nope again. They are built and assembled right here in the SF Bay Area... San Carlos I think with another factory about to open up in the area to fill in their preorders from years ago. Tesla is based right here in my area, and of course, it's a small world... so I got to talk to someone about the company, the cars (and job opportunities)
