In Need of a DD immediately!

Alright so a bit of a background - I have a 2006 G35X which I love, except that its not manual (it'd be perfect if it was). I have a daily round trip of about 60-80 miles which has taken much more money than I'd like out of my pocket with gas. SO I switched with my girlfriend (who drives 2 miles to get to work) and now am driving a 2005 Altima 2.5S. I figured it'd save me some money. WRONG. With the Infiniti I averaged 20 mpg, with the Nissan 24 mpg while babying the throttle. I also just found out the damn thing doesn't have anti-lock brakes, Fred Beans dealership screwed her on that as they apparently assured her it did have them. But its too late to do anything there and I don't see anything in the paperwork stating it has them. DON"T GO TO FRED BEANS THEY WILL SCREW YOU.

Needless to say I'm in search of getting rid of the Altima for something better on gas. Manual or Auto, doesn't matter. I'd prefer AWD but realize thats tough to come by if I want 30+ avg mpg. I was just going to go get a Honda Fit, was looking at them yesterday and they seemed to fit the need. But my girlfriend hates them and won't let me trade her car for it. So looking for suggestions, looking at Subie, VW, Ford, Honda, Acura, and any other suggestions.

What do you suggest? The cheaper and more efficient, the better as we just bought a house, settle on Nov. 23, and I'd like to buy a G coupe within a year or so.

I see you didn't mention you are considering GM, but what about a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox?

FWD - 22 city/32hwy
AWD - 20 city/29hwy

Honestly never thought of GM - those discounts just got taken away from us at work so that's probably why. I also have only heard good things about their trucks - last person I knew that had an Equinox had returned 2, both as lemons. I'll add that to the list

I can't think of a single car/SUV that gets 30+ mpg hwy, and has 4WD/AWD. Try using this site, the advanced search is pretty useful.

toyota prius!!! Idk what it is about them but most girls like how they look so maybe your girl will too. The inside is pretty nice and it doesn't eat fuel just barely sips it.

The base legacy gets 31 mpg highway, and has AWD

I've been doing some serious shopping, as I will have a 100+ mile commute shortly, and I've crossed Corolla/Civic/Yaris/Fit off of my list. Cars that remain on my "potentials" list are: Subaru Impreza (felt by FAR the most solid, and I prefer the sitting position), Golf TDI (can you say torque AND 40 MPG?)

Both have excellent utility in that they're both hatchbacks, and are spectacularly cheap to insure.

With the CVT, the new legacy 2.5i is 23/31

The Impreza is lower... not sure why.

my 2.5s altima got around 26-28 highway especially...might need some stuff changed to be honest with you. And gas is only like 10 cents more a gallon if that for the G. I dont understand the fact of needing a DD unless your pushing like 500HP or your g is a show car...Its a 26k used 2006 g35x, not a lambo. Do the math and see if you save more with a new car, an extra one on the insurance, while still putting gas in it. guarantee youll spend more by buying a "beater" meanwhile your car will last to 200K with ease

How are you getting 24 MPG on a 2.5L Altima?

I get 24 MPG on my 3.5L V6 Maxima

EDIT: Nvm, saw you're driving an 05. You need to try the newer model (07+).
