Car's that APPRECIATE in Value

OK

So my Fiance' and I spend a whopping 10 minutes in the car combined every day - at least until she finds dam job - and we pay nearly $1200 a month before maintenance on payments, insurance and gas. Now considering we'll get little of that back upon sale of the car - hell she leases her truck - we are FOOLS. So since she is in a lease that has 2 years on it I was thinking if I sold my car and bought a cheaper car OR A CAR THAT APPRECIATES - how much more saavy we would be!

My G sits in a train station lot all day and while the miles are low and this could be a great car to have in a couple years once the loan is paid off, my gut tells me that 1200 is too much per month under most circumstances except winning the lotto or the Apprentice. It just doesn't make sense.

Scenario 1 - buy a civic for 6k - drive it for 2 years and sell it for 4k with little maintenance cost

Scenario 2 - buy a Grand National for 15k drive it for 20 years or less and sell it for more than I originally paid - have some maintenance costs and issues with TT such as long warm ups and such.

In either scenario her crappy truck is turned back in in 2 years and we can get a 5 series or M to replace it and I can have low or no car payments with my civic or appreciating Grand Nat or other car

What OTHER cars would you guys reccommend that appreciate. The supra is great and the old 300's too but they are pricey and they scream to be modded which is against the idea of saving and eventually getting a M35/45. I like the old beater idea but the GN could make me $ if it wasn't a maintenance nightmare. HELP! And I'm finding it difficult to sell my car for anywhere near what I want to I am in no hurry!

Re: Car's that APPRECIATE in Value

The 1994-1996 Chevrolet Impala SS seems to be holding its value. The depreciation curve was remarkably similar to the GN, and well-kept (bone stock) examples are still commanding premium prices. You can get a lightly modified SS for about the same $$$ as the GN.

LT-1 motors are very durable as well, with 250,000 miles achievable in fleet service (severe duty) before rebuild.

PM if interested in more details.

Re: Car's that APPRECIATE in Value

If the car is mainly sitting in a parking lot, even $6000 for a civic may be more than you want to spend. But it is on the right track.

Just get reliable enough that you don't miss work, or I could suggest getting an older, $3000, car.

Very few cars are going to appreciate in value. Especially when you consider the opportunity lost on the money.

Re: Car's that APPRECIATE in Value

I was considering a GTO. Hold on to one of those for 25 years and it may outperform a bond. Hell the civic idea is most compelling. It's about not losing 25k in 5 years not gaining value. I think the GN is pretty good for holding even at least. Better than a BMW 7 series for sure.

Re: Car's that APPRECIATE in Value

Need to look at older cars if you are looking for an appreciation in value. Hell my little VW bug is worth a lot more money than I thought.

This car deserves respect but personally I wouldn't want an older car as my main form of transportation. I would get one of these for a weekend deal.

No maintenance (well very little), never breaks down, good mpg and the net value doesn't go down that much. 80 bucks a month to drive is probably less then your direct tv bill. Cancel the TV and drive for free.

Re: Car's that APPRECIATE in Value

There are really no cars that I can afford that will appreciate!
Especially if you drive them. Not gonna happen.

I hear the Mclarens go up every day. F1 isn't that pricey!
