New - my G but I would add NAV.

Used - low mileage M35/45 maybe?
2001/2002 E55 AMG?

$40k really isn't what it used to be. These days you can't really get too much car for that money. I'd be looking at the g35..the Lexus GS 430 (old body)....new body CLK 320...I could definitely find an m3 for that much but it's way too unreliable to buy without or near end of warranty, plus it's going to become the old body soon so I would suffer more depreciation....

Everyone has different tastes in cars and needs. That GS 430 looks pretty good, fast engine, bigger brakes, lexus reliability and quality. Those GS' are soo smooth too, and I love the fact that it's a wide body, it's not cramped like the G35. You've got a lot of leg room and arm room. Plus there is a lot of really classy body kits out there for the GS.
