I originally posted this over at The Car Lounge:
I had the opportunity last week to drive a Ford GT from Detroit out to Boston. Bagel or not I had to post some reflections on the experience.
The car is unbeleivably easy to drive. The clutch is much lighter than most other "economical" sports cars I've driven - in fact much easier than my G35 6MT. The incredibly direct steering combined with a linear throttle responce results in a comfortable and predictable driving experience. The car is only marginally stiffer than my G35 - only with ABSOLUTELY NO ROLL. There is torque EVERYWHERE! It is certainly a car that has to be respected with no traction control. Crusing at 80mph on the highway yielded over 22mpg! Although I kept it tame on the highway, I feel as though this car would be just as easy/predictable to drive on a track.
Cabin noise is just slightly louder than a Mustang GT, mostly due to the huge tires. Conversation between me and my co-driver were akin to a dinner conversation at a family restaurant. After 10+ hours the only sore spot on my body was my cheeks from smiling so much. Visability in the car is no problem - but I did not heed Jeremy Clarkson's warning as the second time getting out of the car I smacked the roof extensions on the doors. You really would be in a pickle if someone parked close to you in a lot because to exgress you must open the doors almost completely.
Easy to drive, amazing power/handling, 22mpg, and more looks than a supermodel (there was not a single reststop that did not end with a crowd around the car). If I could afford the economical MRSP of $150K I would drive this car EVERYDAY. Driving through PA on a beautiful clear day listening to Poison I realized: "Life just doesn't get better than this." It is nothing less than a shame production will end soon.
Rule #1: I think this is the exact car I drove since it was a prototype model. I felt priviledged to add to the 30K miles on the clock - and if things pan out it will not be the last time behind the wheel of this beauty.
