Hello Everyone my name is karim and i live in orlando im 18 and i have been looking through this forum and studying pictures for 2 straight days. I think photography is something i would really like to do with my free time. Any advice how i can get started (classes, equipment, etc.). Anybody have stories on how you started?

About 2 years ago I started out by admiring all the quality pictures here on driver and knew i wanted to try it. So i picked up a Canon Digi Rebel XT with the kit lens. I had never used a DSLR before and had no idea what any of the controls and functions meant and what they actually did. So i just started shooting away, the more pictures you take, the more you learn. It also helps to go on photography forums and read read read!
You DONT need classes for photography, its more fun to learn it all on your own. You can pick up a used Canon XT or Nikon d40 with a kit lens for around $400 or less now adays. Then if/when you decide you want to get more serious, you can upgrade to a better body/lenses/etc. -GP- |

Build a collection of nice lenses, then work your way up to a nicer body.
A good lens makes a WORLD of difference. my .02. Oh, and never get discouraged. I think my photography sucks, but I still keep shooting anyway. *shrug*

+1 The XT and d40 are more than capable bodies for atleast a year if you've never done any photography. If you grow out of the kit lens before that first year, start trying out new lenses before getting a new body. -GP- |

Do you want to buy new or used? You can get very nice used products on the dedicated Canon or Nikon forums, you just have to research the cameras and decide which is best for you.

They have hands down the most competetive prices and BEST customer service anywhere in the country. I bought an 85 f1.8 a couple weeks ago, it had a few particles inside the glass, called em for an exchange, they sent me a shipping label with no hassle and shipped the new one back to me in 2 days. -GP- |

yea.. I would suggest getting a XTi over the XSi as a beginner body.. due to the fact that the next upgrade would be the 40D or 5D and they all use compact flash whereas the XSi uses SD.. but other than that they're all good bodies
