Looking for personal experience with Sigma EX lenses...

So, I've decided, if I keep waiting to save up for the 24-70 L, or the 70-200 2.8 L, I'll never actually get around to doing it.

So, in the interest of progressing past these crappy lenses I'm using now, but without "wasting" money on more sh*t, I've looked into the Sigma's. Heard some good things, but want more than 1-2 "friends" opinions.

Particularly the Sigma EX 24-70, and the Sigma EX 70-200. (And if anyone has any knowledge about the specific "practical" difference between the original, and the II.)

Anyone? I need something with a little bit of range to it, that's for sure. But I'm not baller status *cough*calivinandbob*cough*

I've used 2 sigma lenses and a sigma flash a long time ago, and honestly I regret buying them after having used the canon equivalents, the build quality and function of the canon was always worth the extra cost in the end I sold them all and got canon glass but then again maybe thats just me.

If you can afford the 70-200 2.8L you could always pick up a nice 70-200 F4L

That f4 kills me. I've almost picked it up several times, but just couldn't bring myself to be limited to that. I have a strong feeling I would need the extra stop a lot.

I've heard good things about the latest Sigma EX series, but was curious if anyone else did. I don't want to buy something that I'd end up really just hating.

Although anything is better than what I'm using now.

Do you have a local camera store? Some stores will let you pick them up and try them out and compare them side by side to see how you like them.

Somewhere there's one around here. But the selections are so scattered, and the Wolf Camera stores have such different inventory that I'd spend half the day finding the lenses I wanted to try out. LOL

I cannot tell you about the specific lens that you are looking at but I do have a SIgma lens and had the opposite experience then Infinus. My lens has been working great for the past 2 years and the quality is top notch, it is not an L lens but I was willing to settle for over 95% of features and quality for 30% of the price.

This is the lens I have

IMO the 3rd party lenses have come quite a ways from the older days. You see them being used more and more. While they dont produce 100% of the features of they're Canon/Nikon equivalents, they give similar results at a better price. I've had my Tamron 17-50 for well over a year and at one point it was the only lens i had for my XT and 40D. I recall reading on POTN that Sigma's 30 1.4 was more highly regarded than its Canon equivalent.

All brands produce stellar and crappy lenses. The biggest problem facing third party lenses is quality control. If you buy a lens that is respected but you are not happy with it, try to exchange it for another copy as it could just be QC related.

That said, Sigma, Tokina, and Tamron have some fine lenses and in some cases, can certainly hold their ground against the more expensive counterparts from Canon, Nikkor, Sony, etc., especially by taking into account the price differences.

One prime example I have are the Sigma macro lenses compared to those offered by Nikkor. Nikkor's macro lenses tend to suffer from pretty bad CA, the Sigmas do not, image quality is still excellent (contrast, color, sharpness), and they cost quite a bit less. The most noticeable difference is construction quality though the newer mid- and high-end models have improved drastically, some are absolute tanks.

I shop all brands when searching for lenses. Like I said, all brands have a mix of garbage and excellent lenses so there is no point in being overly brand conscious. Do plenty of research and choose what suits you best, no lens is perfect (despite what die hards will tell you).

I've used Sigma lenses to shoot skydiving for many years. Build quality is generally very good and image quality is on par with Nikkor or Canon. I've only used their higher end stuff though. When it comes to glass, you generally get what you pay for. It really boils down to what you need compared to how much you're willing to spend. Sigma's higher end glass has served me well for many years though......

This is a scanned image taken with ISO100 Slide Film and a Sigma 15mm Fisheye. This lens has survived more than 1500 skydives mounted on my helmet - it's survived 200mph+ wind speeds, gone through clouds, rapid temp/humidity changes. and several fairly hard impacts, and it looks pretty much brand new. Never had a single issue with it.

My 20mm died a few years ago but I can't really blame Sigma for that. My camera helmet came off in freefall and the lens hit a swamp at around 180 mph. It did not survive

What do you consider their "higher end" stuff?

Pretty much any prime EX series lens with a 2.8 or larger fixed aperture. Anything with an F4-5.6 usually costs about the same (give or take) from Nikkor and, given the choice, I'll gladly pay a bit more for OEM lenses over after market.

I've only used Sigma's prime wide angle lenses so I really don't have any experience with their longer zooms. The build/image quality has been excellent with all of them though.
