So I find my 70-200 f2.8 IS isn't getting the proper use, meaning I don't use it for what it was meant for: low light indoors photography. When I do use it, it's usually outdoors on sunny days. On top of that, I don't get enough reach with it. So here is what I've come up with. Anyone who can think of an alternative combination, please speak up as I could use the advice:
- Sell the 70-200 f2.8 IS and replace it with 100-400, pocket the difference (~ $300) for some other goodies. This one is still in question, as I LOVE the 50 f1.2: - Sell the 50 f1.2 (~ $1250) and get: 1. 70-200 f4 (non IS) - to cover the now lost mid range (55-100mm) ~ $450 2. 50 f1.4 - to replace the uber fast prime - ~ $380 ![]() 3. 100 f2.8 Macro so I can shoot the billion of insects, spiders, and other monstrosities I have around the house and in the backyard - ~ $380 OR MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro - ~ $800 (and tap into the goodies budget) 4. Monopod for motorsports photography - ~ $70 (will need to tap into the 'goodies' budget )----------- Selling the 70-200 f2.8 IS is a given and as a matter of fact it has already been posted for sale on POTN and FM. However letting the 50 f1.2 go will be very tough. This lens is so sharp, I doubt any other prime can touch it (probably the f1 I'm not a wedding photographer, so having a fast ISed 70-200 is really a luxury. Marcus and Bob have really made jealous of their wildlife photography and I would like to give it a shot as well. I could also use the 100-400 at the track and in air shows, which the 70-200 + 1.4x proved to be too short at. As for the 50 f1.2... I don't think my level photography justifies this lens at this point in time. I think I'd much rather spend the money on something, which I actually put to use more often. I live in a heavily wooded area, and there are quite a few animals (deers, raccoons, squirrels, etc.), which the 100-400 will be able to handle better. Than there are all the bees, dragonflies, insects, crazy a$$ looking spiders, which all deserve some fame too Sorry for the long post, but I'm really not sure how to proceed with the 50 f1.2 part... Any thoughts and input, would be greatly appreciated. ![]()

I completely understand your choice of getting rid of the 70-200. Based on your uses, it doesn't seem practical. That lens is a wedding/event photographers dream, but all other applications could be covered better with other lenses. If you don't use it, you don't need it.
The 50 1.2, on the other hand, is an extraordinary piece of glass. If your intent is to improve as a photographer, it might serve you to either work with this lens or to grow into it. 50mm primes have a fantastic ability to create images with stunning sharpness, color, and contrast. If you really feel like you would do better with other things, then that is your choice to make, but if you have a steady income with which these things would only be a few weeks/months away without selling the 50 1.2, I would say keep it. In the end it is your decision to make - and yours to be happy with.

Thanks bro. The 50 f1.2 is a true masterpiece. I really want a Macro lens too though, and maybe the 50 f1.4 won't be THAT much of a downgrade I owned it in the past, but I can't say I was nearly impressed with its IQ compared to the f1.2 Don't get me wrong, the f1.4 is a fine lens for its price, but it's not even close to the f1.2My wife and daughter @ f1.2 - Look at that 3D effect ![]()

mm the 1.2 is overpriced for what it is... I loved using it but couldn't justify the price... the 70-200 2.8 IS is a dream for WHATEVER use... mine has been tack sharp for every occasion and even if it sits in my bag for a while, when it's used, i remember why i'm never selling mine.
sell the 50 1.2 to fund the rest of your purchases (50 1.4, 100 macro, monopod) . It really is just hard to justify the 50 1.2 unless you're a pro. Also a note about the MP-E 65mm... from reading about that lens, it's no joke and it's supposedly got somewhat of a steep learning curve to figure out how exactly to use that lens since it's not the regular... just FYI http://www.luminous-landscape.com/re.../mp-e-65.shtml

plus if you want to focus on wildlife photography, get the canon 300mm f/4 IS and a tcon lol...
I just rented the 100-400mm for a track event this saturday (Ferrari Challenge woohooo!!), We'll see how that goes. I've been heavily leaning towards the 300 f/4 IS since it's cheap, light and supposedly sharp (not to mention a good deal).

I'd sell the 70-200 for the 100-400, but keep the 50 1.2 at least until the 50 1.4 mkII comes out.

Yeah, I'm aware of the MP-E... It doesn't have AF. It's all about manual. I think I'll stick to the 100 Macro. But right now, I really am feeling bad for letting the f1.2 go. I think for now, I'll proceed with part 1 of my plan and sell the 70-200 to fund the 100-400. I just don't use the 70-200 in low light, so f2.8 + IS are really an overkill. I'd much rather have a longer reach.

I find prime telephotos very limiting. It's one thing shooting a 50mm or 85mm prime, where a few steps back or forward can fix your framing problem. With a long tele prime however, shooting at 300, 400, and 500mm you'll need to compensate by possibly moving 50-100 ft.... I like the freedom of being able to zoom in and out as needed. I guess you can always crop in, but you can't crop out... only run backwards... ![]()

Already have the 1.4x. But like I wrote above, even with the extender, 280mm isn't cutting it. The 100-400 are going from ~$1,430 new. I have a pending purchase for a 3 mo. old one for $1,250 shipped.

Congrats on the purchase. Sorry I didn't get to chime in Daniel. Saw the thread this morning but was swamped at work. Now you got reach, have fun chasing wildlife! Depending on the min focus distance it could double as a macro lens....keep that 50 f1.2 for a while
Did you sell your TC too?

Nope. TC remains! 400mm X 1.4TC X 1.6 Crop factor = 896mm @ f8 )... that's ok though, quick little taping the contacts mod and AF will work like a champ! ![]()
