Need lens suggestion

So I finally decided to actually go ahead and purchase a DSLR. Getting the XSi with kit lens, nifty 50 (50 f/1.8) and need a suggestion for one more lens, not looking at spending insane amounts of money here as I'm just getting into it.

Suggestions? Any wide-angle lenses ~$300?

if you have the kit lens 18-55mm and got the 50mm 1.8 then for the 3rd lens i'd get the canon 55-250mm IS to extend your reach.

Now I'm thinking this instead:

XSi body, 50mm f/1.8, and Zoom Super Wide Angle SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF]

^^ Would you recommend I get the kit lens & the 55-250 instead of no kit lens & just the 17-50?

do NOT get any adapters/extenders to make it in to the wide angle.

Good lens, actually. It is my primary lens on my D200. Very good contrast, color, and sharpness but it is certainly not "super wide." Only problem is the filter ring might become loose requiring you to remove a part to tighten a couple of screws. Hopefully Tamron has corrected this problem by now.

I think you should go wide to help with taking photos of your construction projects. I have the Canon 10-22 which I use all the time on our our projects. It is out of you price range, but there are probably other options.

Tamron has an 11-18mm for around $570 new (buy slightly used and save money). I had it for my Konica-Minolta 7D and it was a nice lens with controlled distortions. I miss it but haven't replaced it yet because I only used it for landscapes that I tend to only take while in the mountains.
