nice writeup . i'm sure shooting with a rig still has so many challenges before you can take those "magazine" style shots!

FYI for your article, here is a cheap place to get some suction cups with spuds:

nice write up. I would suggest to use two super clamps rather than one super clamp and a spring clamp for added security. You have hundreds to thousands of dollars of camera equipment hanging from a pole, its not something you would want to risk dropping. Also, if the spring clamp were to fail, not only would you risk damaging your equipment, but also risk scratching or even denting the car.

also, for more stability (less vibration), I would recommend using a thicker pole. this would allow you the opportunity to drive the car rather than pushing it.

Thanks for sharing this. This will be my next purchase (I'll DIY it) instead of another lens, that can wait. Rig shots are so awesome!

Some nice info here, but I personally like using shorter exposure times and doing them in useful ambient light rather than at night. When I do them in day/dusk light, I have more background to work with and to portray movement. Night shots, especially those with over 2 second exposure, tend to smear the already limited background to the point where all you see are light streaks. Other than the blur in the wheels, the car looks like its standing still.

You want the background to blur just like in classic rolling shots.

For anyone who is interested in getting different ideas and various opinions on different setups and how to build them, there is a great DIY thread I started on POTN, which many members contributed to:

Official Automotive Rigs - DIY Thread

The cars were all driven in these.

1.3 sec

1.6 sec but driven too fast

2 sec - just right imo

2 sec - the right amount of blur to convey movement (not too much not too little)

2.5 sec - borderline excessive (the car looks like it's standing)

4 sec - WAY too much smear... the car looks like it's standing

2.5 sec. - again, just the right amount of blur. Enough to convey movement without overdoing it

I agree 2 super clamps would be more secure. I meant to include that fact in the article but I must've left it out. As for the pole, yes, a thicker aluminum pole is another option. That I did point out in the article.

Thanks for the feedback.

I don't have an UWA lens, but plan to get one in the future. My widest lens starts at 18mm. Is that wide enough to get the entire car in the photo?
