ultimate macro and what it takes..

so i purchased this macro coupling ring from b&h for $8 so i could reverse mount the nifty fifty onto my 55-250. it's almost too much magnification to be practical but if i could ever get a bug to stay still i could take a portrait of its face... it gives me 5:1 magnification (50 into 250 = 5). i was hoping it would be adjustable, for example i thought i could do 100mm focal length and achieve 2:1 mag, but unfortanetly the vignetting at anything below 200mm is horrible.

here is a grain of salt - not cropped(u really need tons of light this close up, and your dof is crap, so i had to stop it all the way down):

and here's the setup:

That's badass! I am in need of a Macro setup as well.

How are you liking the 55-250 IS? I'm planning on ordering that this week.

I use the 100 Macro from Canon to shoot all my jewelry seems to be a great lens IMO

Wow, that's amazing. I learned in my chemistry lecture that salt should form in near perfect cubes... guess they're wrong... or that's not salt. lol
Wish I could do some incredible macro pictures.

haha.. well it's not standard table salt which i think is in near perfect cubes... its either sea salt or kosher salt.. it's a lot easier to add a pinch of this to something than regular table salt..
