Boooo.... so I went ahead and taped the contacts on the converter to get AF going with this lens. The good news is that AF is working. The bad news is that it's doing some very $hitty job while in the process. Even in bright sun and high contrasty objects, it hunts like a bitch and often times mis-locks.
![]() Out of 50 shots or so, this is all I got. There were some others but the birds were too damn far. Man I have a lot to learn. All bellow were shot at 560mm @ f5.6 (Av mode). 1. This was nothing special as the dude was standing still... ![]() 2. Another standstill no brainer... ![]() 3. Onto moving objects.... OOF BLUR! ![]() 4. This one seems in focus but the shutter speed wasn't fast enough. Should have bumped ISO ![]() ![]() 5. Same story as above, the wings got blurred... ![]() 6. Ha! A decent one at last! ![]() ![]() 7. Back to stationary subjects. Nothing special, I just liked the little crafts with the red sail covers ![]() ![]() 8. Last one ![]()

Daniel, I actually like the blurred wing effect #4, it gives it a cool sense of motion, nice shot.
Are there any marshes or lagoons or state parks near you? There's gotta be some spots with birds that you could get closer to nearby in a more "rural" environment. Where do the flickr guys go who live in your area?

Thanks Marcus. I can see your point ![]() Quote:
I'm sure there are, I'll need to do some homework because there are so many seagulls one can shoot... Quote:
How would I find out? Is there a geographical search function in Flickr?

You could also search for "birds Connecticut", I got 4000+ results. Sort them my most interesting and look to see if the photographer noted where the photo was taken. Check out this group - Connecticut Wildlife . Its pretty small but may give you an idea of locations to find some good subjects.

What settings did you use when you hooked up the TC?
I had similar problems when I first started using a 2xTC on my Nikkor 80-200 2.8. The auto focus works with the TC so I didn't have to tape any contacts but, the focus wasn't very accurate in Program Mode. After some experimentation, I had the best success when I shot in Manual mode with the Aperture set to max (2.8) Then I just adjusted the shutter speed for proper exposure and it worked great. Edit: Not sure about the Canon but, with the Nikon, you're supposed to attach the TC to the lens before attaching it to the camera. It gets confused when you do it the other way around.. |

I used Av mode - all wide open at f5.6 The taping mod is a simple override, but it create a big headache for the camera. The tape prevents from having the extender register with the camera, so the camera does not know there is one, cutting the light by half. Thus, the camera *thinks* it's f5.6 as it's registered by the lens, but the actual amount of light is equivalent to f8 - this means auto-focus is trying to focus on a subject at 400mm @ f5.6, but the amount of light and DOF is of f8, which puts it beyond its working limits and throws it off - causing it to extra hunt. I did some reading on POTN, and it appears that this specific hacked combo 40D + 100-400 is notorious for hunting in less than ideal lighting. Apparently, the 30D which is an older model and thus, has less of a sensitive AF mechanism, works better with this mod. It's a simple trade off. ![]()

Yeah. I found I ended up with lots of shots in trash bin when I hooked up 2xTC to anything with less than a 2.8 aperture if isn't nice and bright outside.
I like 4,6, and 8. They turned out great. |
