it's a generic tip, but if you pull the trigger on a dslr, the best advice is to go out and shoot any and everything. reading tips/tricks on how to use a camera and its functions is no substitute for seeing how they all relate to each other.

happy shooting!` `

Shoot in Manual.

Marcus (Candlestickpark) is the Nikon man. I'm sure he'll have a bunch of tips for you once he sees this thread.

^LOL, just saw this thread, somehow I missed it in August.

My tips for folks starting out are similar to what others have said. Get out of auto mode and shoot in one of the Priority Modes (Aperture for most shots, Shutter for panning). Join flickr and search for the types of photos you'd like to take. Read the exif data and go out and try and replicate the shot.

Most Nikonians don't like him for various reasons, but Ken Rockwell has a good explanation on how to use the D60's AF system: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d60/af-settings.htm

Read up on how to properly expose a photo (aperture, shutter speed, and iso and how they all relate to each other): Understanding Exposure is a great book. Get out and shoot and try out different settings. Happy shooting!
