Want to buy a Digital SLR camera - Advice?

Hey, I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am looking to buy a digital SLR camera. This would be used primarily for taking pictures of the kids playing baseball. I don't know a lot about cameras, so I decided to post this. Right now I have a small digital camera and I usually prefocus on a player by pushing half down on the button. When the ball comes into view, I fully depress the button. Often what is on the lcd is not what I get. And shooting in multiple consecutive frames degrades the quality. So I am looking and had a few questions. What should I be looking for in a camera? What size of zoom is good enough? Brand? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

But I've used Nikon since I started with photography and I liked it but Canon gives you more bang for the buck. Lenses are a little less expensive and I think they're a little more user friendly.

I wouldnt recommend anything other than those two

If you're on a budget, keep an eye out for a used 40d for the 6.5 fps. (~$700, I think)

If money is no object, pick up a 7d for the 8 fps and advanced AF system. ($1500)

As for lenses, I'd recommend the 100-400L if you want those tight crops. My buddy shoots little league and that is his go-to lens for it. But it's also on the pricey side as it is considered a professional lens. That said, it's worth every penny. ($1500)

If you're not looking to spend that much or don't need the length of the 100-400, look at the 70-200 f/4 non-IS (assuming these are day games). ($636)

And if that's too much for you, then the "nifty two-fifty" is a very popular entry level/kit lens. For the price, it's great. ($220)

I prefer Nikon but if budget is a concern then go with Canon. Canon has more reasonably priced equipment.

Also, buy used. You can save A LOT of money and still have virtually brand new equipment. I have $10,000 worth of equipment at retail (B&H pricing) but spent $5k by buying used. KEH.com is a good option for used equipment, and their grading systems HIGHLY conservative, meaning the equipment is actually in far better shape than their grading system may indicate.

Any issues with the warranty if buying used? Thats one thing that keeps me away from good deals for used equipment. I'd hate to have bought a camera and be out the money in case the camera was defective.

IDK about the warranty. It's probably out on the D70s.
But I'll give full disclosure. The on-board flash doesn't work, and I can post the shutter count (I have already posted it somewhere, don't remember what it is, but I can find out)

The flash situation is easily fixed with a hot-shoe flash. Even a cheapo one is better than the near-useless on-board unit anyway.
